Longford Leader columnist Mattie Fox: 'Alzheimer Café is a wonderful initiative'

Alzheimer’s affects many older people now, so the birth of the first ever Longford initiative to help Alzheimer’s patients, is a welcome thing to behold.

The Longford branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland will open their first Alzheimer Cafe in Longford Credit Union Ltd, 50 Main Street on Wednesday, January 30 and on the last Wednesday of every month, from 7pm to 8.30pm.

Anyone who is affected by dementia will be welcome and the topic for January is “Living with Dementia” - a social evening of talks and with tea, coffee and scones being served.

This is free of charge, and there is car parking at the rear of the building.

This is a wonderful initiative, and those for whom some help and advice on handling Alzheimer patients must be relieved and glad to see something happening in our own Longford, which has been decimated by several areas where spending has been cut back, in recent years.
