Road accident case comes to abrupt end in court

A man who appeared at last week’s sitting of Longford District Court charged under the Road Traffic Act was convicted and fined €200 following a hearing into the matter.

Thomas Doyle, The Island, Kenagh, Co Longford appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon charged with driving while holding a mobile phone at Drynan, Ballymahon on May 23, 2017.

Outlining the evidence to the court, Garda Denise Dockery said that on the date in question she was in patrol in the area when she observed the defendant driving while on the phone.

Garda Dockery said she stopped the defendant, spoke to him and subsequently issued a fixed penalty notice in respect of the matter.

However, the court heard last Tuesday that the fine still remained unpaid.

In his defence, Mr Doyle told the court that he attempted to pay the fine, but was one day outside of the time limit and his payment had subsequently been rejected.

Following her deliberations on the matter, Judge Lydon convicted the defendant and fined him accordingly.
