Longford County Council gritting crews operating since 4.30am this morning

Longford County Council gritting crews were dispatched at 4.30am this morning and are still out as the country is gripped by the #BeastFromTheEast and #StormEmma and heading towards a Red Alert lock down. 

Longford County Council crews will grit again today, at 2pm, weather permitting. 

The local authority is urging people not to travel unless it is an emergency.

Longford County Council statement;
There is a status red snow and ice weather warning for the entire Country with heavy snow showers and wnds up to 100km/h. Temperatures to drop to -7C. There will be major disruption to transport services.

All Schools in County Longford are closed.

Further heavy snow showers will bring accumulations of significant levels with all areas at risk. People are being warned not to travel during Storm Emma unless it is an Emergency.

National , Regional and some Local Routes in the County, as per the Council's Winter Maintenance Plan , remain open but drivers should exercise extreme care.

Gritting Crews were dispatched at 4.30am this morning and are still out. Weather permitting crews will grit again at 2.00 pm today.

Longford County Councils Winter Service Plan identifies priority routes and details arrangements by Longford County Council to deliver Winter Maintenance in the County.

The Winter Service Plan is available on the Longford County Council Website www.longfordcoco.ie

Priority 1 and Priority 2 Routes are treated as part of normal winter service. All other routes not treated as part of the normal winter service may be treated where resources are available and weather permits.

Ballymahon Outside the GAA pitch on the N55.
Kenagh Old Community hall, Ballymahon road.

Newtowncashel Old quarry entrance, beside the GAA pitch.
Ardagh Car park/open area behind the playground.

Members of the public are being advised to stay indoors from 4pm today, Thursday, March 1 and to stay there until at least midday on Friday.
