A feast of family fun at Abbeylara Field Day

Abbeylara will be a hive of activity and top quality entertainment on Sunday next, June 12, as it plays host to its 9th annual Field Day.

The venue for this eagerly anticipated family day out is Bridie and John Gilligan’s field, Cloonaghmore, Abbeylara and the show will feature many old favourites and a plethora of new surprises for those who venture along.

A centrepiece of the event are the ‘Tractor Pulling Championships’ and there will also be a ‘Sheep Dog Demonstration’ and ‘Threshing Demonstration’.

Abbeylara Community Development committee are very grateful to Crawford’s Bar (Josie & William Crawford Jnr), who are once again, the main sponsors of the Field Day.

Commencing from 12 noon, patrons will be able to take a trip back in time and admire a display of classic vintage cars, tractors and motorbikes. The autojumble, car boot sale and auction are also sure to attract plenty of interest.

The first Abbeylara Field Day took place in 2008 and every year since it has proved a very enjoyable occasion for all ages, with people travelling from many parts of the country to soak up the atmosphere around the picturesque hills of north Longford.

Another highlight of the day will be ‘Midget Car Racing’ and organisers are very thankful to Motorsport Ireland for their assistance and co-operation with this.

There will be food stalls and trade stands, and musical entertainment will commence from the main stage of the venue at 3pm.

The always popular fun fair, and face painting, will ensure there is plenty to excite and keep children occupied.

For those with a competitive streak, there is the Best Dressed Lady, Wellie Throwing and Dog Show competitions. Dog lovers from all over the county and beyond descend on Abbeylara, so you are advised to register early for the Dog Show.

All in all, it promises to be yet another memorable family day out, and Abbeylara is certainly the place to be next Sunday.

There is free car parking available, including disabled parking close to the entrance for permit holders. There will be toilets on site and all exhibitors will receive a memento and meal voucher.

All proceeds raised on the day go to Abbeylara Parish Centre and enquiries should be directed to (086) 8855189. Admission is €10 and children are free.

Country music lovers are also in for a treat at Abbeylara Parish Centre on Friday, July 8 as Derek Ryan returns by popular demand to perform in concert. So make it a date for your diary!
