Thanks to the large number of bookings for our Past Pupils Reunion Gathering event on Saturday, October 26. So if you have not replied so far we ask you to please do so. We have had some most interesting emails and notes from some people far away who can’t make it. It is really heartening to see the lovely memories they have. Many are coming and are hopeful of meeting schoolmates from 50 + years ago. Please contact Brian, Alice, Pat Duffy or Kevin. This will also be an opportunity for many from outside the parish now to purchase the parish book ‘Streete and It’s People’.
The two lights that were not working last week have now been repaired so lights are on at night until 9.45pm. All welcome, we just ask that you support our Streete Parish Park Lotto envelopes.
In case anyone is wondering, the name Streete Parish Park etc has been temporarily removed from the front of the building for repair and recolouring in preparation for the Gathering event on October 26.
Streete Bowls Club
The Westmeath League restarts this week with the Streete A team looking to defend their title with an away match against Tyrrellspass C. The Streete A and B teams will be taking each other on at the Streete complex and our D team will travel to Athlone for a difficult away game. The Streete selectors for this year; Sean Flood, Enda Murphy and Martin Gaynor, are really looking forward to seeing how the teams perform in the league. Three new members have joined us recently; Nathan Clarke, Patrick Ownes and Kieran Fahy and we are hoping to give them game time in the near future.
New members are always welcome at the Streete Bowls Club – come along on Tuesdays at 8.30 and see what we have to offer.
Would you like to be more confident at speaking in public and to learn how to improve your communication skills? Longford Toastmasters are looking for new members to join our club. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month in The Longford Arms Hotel from 8.20pm until 10.30pm. Our next meeting takes place on October 17. All are welcome to our enjoyable and sociable meetings and no experience is required. For further information please contact Mary on 086 1219281 or Terrie on 086 1706367.
During the 1820s a branch canal was constructed from the main line of The Royal Canal near Killashee, County Longford to the southern edge of Longford Town. The Ramblers walked the towpath of this long-closed canal from its filled-in harbour in the town, out to Ballymacormick on Sunday, October 6. The towpath has been developed as the Royal Canal Walkway and Cycle route and provides a peaceful route out of the town to the countryside to the south-west. The Canal bed is full of bullrushes and is almost dry in some places, while in others there is enough water for a large number of ducks and moorhens who were clearly used to being fed as they rushed to the canal bank as the Ramblers passed by. The weather for part of the afternoon certainly suited the ducks with a steady drizzle, but rain never discourages the Ramblers and the latter part of the afternoon was dry as the group returned to Longford along the opposite bank of the canal.
Thank you to Anne Airlie who welcomed the Ramblers into her home for their post-walk refreshments.
On October 20, Declan Leonard will lead a walk on the Royal Canal, starting at the Hill of Down near Kinnegad and heading towards Longwood. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at the Hill of Down at 2.15pm.
