An urgent recall is being carried out in Ireland after a safety issue was identified with multiple sand toys sold on Amazon.

In a notice on Thursday, March 12, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) confirmed that these four art-like products, made for children, present a risk to health.

This is because the sand may contain asbestos, which is a banned substance across the EU due to posing a health risk.

The impacted items include the following:

In line with the position in the UK, the CCPC is advising consumers who have one, or more, of these products in their home to do the following:

  • Stop using the product immediately.
  • If the sand is still packaged, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal.
  • If the sand has been used, clean sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a protective mask. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths. Seal it securely, label it clearly and store it in a secure location out of reach of children. Contact your local authority for advice on collection and disposal.
  • Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned.

Customers may wish to contact Amazon to see if there are any remedies available. This can be done via your user account on Amazon.
