Gardaí discover nearly €500k worth of cocaine after stopping a van travelling in Limerick

A follow-up search was conducted at a residence in Castletroy and a further €2,075 and a small quantity of cannabis was seized by Gardaí

Gardaí in Limerick have arrested a man after a significant amount of drugs were discovered in a vehicle he was driving.

As part of ongoing investigations targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs, Gardaí attached to the county's Divisional Drugs Unit stopped a van in Hospital, Co Limerick.

The driver, a man in his 20s, and the vehicle were conveyed to a garda station in the city for a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

In the course of this search, Gardaí discovered a concealment of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of €493,920 in the van. They also seized €3,000 in cash and a number of electronic items.
 
The man was arrested on Saturday afternoon, November 22 and detained under the provisions of Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.
 
A follow-up search was conducted at a residence in Castletroy, Limerick and a further €2,075 and a small quantity of cannabis was seized by Gardaí.
 
The drugs found will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.
 
Investigations are ongoing.
