Two garda were injured during an incident in Dublin on Tuesday, Commissioner Drew Harris has said.
One man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a garda at Capel Street when the members were on patrol.
Mr Harris told the Policing and Community Safety Authority that it was a “very nasty incident”.
He said: “In respect of the two members involved in the incident on Tuesday evening, actually both were injured.
“One received injuries, stab-type wounds to the right arm and the other was punched in the face.
“Both members are doing well, I spoke to them this morning.
“Welfare supports are available to them and obviously the whole organisation extended its good wishes to them for a speedy recovery.
“They are both in good heart.”
Mr Harris added: “They both did exceptionally well on the night and after being attacked very, very instantaneously responded and then made an arrest and brought a very dangerous situation to a safe conclusion – really within the space of seconds – and then very quickly other gardai were on the scene.
“A very nasty incident but one which was brought to a satisfactory conclusion by the actions of the members that night.”
Abdullah Khan, 23, whose address cannot be published due to a court order, appeared at Dublin District Court on Thursday morning.
He was charged with assault causing harm in relation to a garda and the production of a knife.
Garda Sergeant Liam McLaughlin told the court the accused was charged before midnight on Wednesday at Bridewell Garda Station and made no reply to either of the charges after caution.
He said gardai were objecting to bail, but the accused’s legal team said no application for bail would be made.
His legal team requested that he receive medical attention in custody and made an application for legal aid.
Judge Treasa Kelly said the defence should give the prosecution 24 hours’ notice of any bail applications.
She also granted a request from the defence that the accused’s address not be published.
Khan was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court in person next Wednesday for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
