Man appears in court charged with assaulting garda in Dublin

A man has appeared in court charged with assaulting a garda in Dublin city.

Two gardai were on patrol in Capel Street on Tuesday evening when one, who was on probation, received injuries to his upper right arm.

Abdullah Khan, 23, whose address cannot be published due to a court order, appeared at Dublin District Court on Thursday morning.

He was charged with assault causing harm in relation to a garda and the production of a knife.

Garda Sergeant Liam McLaughlin told the court the accused was charged before midnight on Wednesday at Bridewell Garda Station and made no reply to either of the charges after caution.

He said gardai were objecting to bail but the accused’s legal team said no application for bail would be made.

His legal team requested that he receive medical attention in custody and made an application for legal aid.

Judge Treasa Kelly said the defence should give the prosecution 24 hours notice of any bail applications.

She also granted a request from the defence that the accused’s address not be published.

Khan was remanded in custody and is due to appear in court in person next Wednesday for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
