Gardaí say they seized around €47,000 while conducting a Mandatory Intoxicating Testing Checkpoint at approximately 1.30am in the Killarney area

Investigations are underway after tens of thousands of euro in cash was seized after a vehicle was stopped by gardai at a checkpoint in County Kerry in the early hours of this Wednesday.

Gardaí say they seized around €47,000 while conducting a Mandatory Intoxicating Testing (MIT) Checkpoint at approximately 1.30am in the Killarney area.

"While conducting a standard road safety operation, gardaí stopped the vehicle. Following an inspection of the vehicle, gardaí discovered a large quantity of €50 bank notes and suspected cannabis and ecstasy tablets subject to analysis," said a spokesperson.

An investigation into the incident is now underway and gardai say the seized cash remains in their possession at Killarney garda station pending transportation to the internal Property and Evidence Management System.

No further information has been disclosed publicly and it's not known if the vehicle was seized or if any arrests have been made.

A photograph released by gardai indicates that significant resources were deployed during the pre-planned roads policing operation which took place at a large roundabout in the town.
