Gardaí have fined a truck driver caught using a phone while driving on the motorway.
A video posted by An Garda Síochána on social media shows two officers from the Roads Policing Unit pursuing a gravel truck after the driver was spotted using a phone while driving.
An accompanying caption reads: "It's a bit of a myth among some drivers that using a phone while behind the wheel is only a road traffic offence if it's up to a person's ear.
"Distracted driving can be dealt with as careless and even dangerous driving. The newsfeeds and notifications can all wait."
In the video, Linzi Martin and Chris Lynch of the Delvin Roads Policing Unit stop the truck on the hard shoulder, with Martin noting the vehicle was so dirty the registration plate wasn't visible.
Lynch addressed the driver and said, "Just if you're driving, look you know yourself you're driving on the motorway. It's busy. You need to be paying attention, it's such a big rig.
"Are you loaded up? Yeah. So you know yourself, you need to pay attention to the road. Don't drive on the phone. You're going to cause an accident."
The driver was issued a €120 fine and received three penalty points.
