Suspected drug-driver who had no insurance or licence faces court prosecution

A suspected drug-driver who did not have a licence or insurance is facing prosecution before the courts, gardai have confirmed.

Highlighting the detection on social media, they say the driver was subsequently arrested and the vehicle seized.

"We were on patrol in Cork City when we were alerted by the mobility app that this car had no insurance," read the post which also featured a photograph of the Skoda Octavia car.

"They were stopped and the driver tested positive for cannabis and was also found to have no license. The driver was arrested and the car was seized. Court to follow," the post.

The photo published by gardai indicates the insurance on the vehicle expired nearly a year ago - in May 2023.

If convicted in the courts, the driver is facing a potential disqualification and a prison sentence.

An analysis of samples will determine whether or not the suspect is prosecuted for drug-driving.

Since gardai were given access to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland database at the end of last year, there have been thousands of detections of motorists driving without insurance.

Every member of the force has access to the Mobility App which allows them to easily check the status of vehicles and drivers the encounter.
