Longford public order case adjourned to February

A young man who became abusive to a bus driver while drunk will return before Longford District Court in February to have the matter finalised.
Nathan Killian (22) of Cleggarnagh, Rathconrath, Westmeath faced a charge that on August 31, 2022 at Main Street, Ballymahon he was present in a public place intoxicated to such an extent he presented a danger to himself or others and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour.

Sergeant Enda Daly told the judge that on the date of the offence Longford Garda Station received a call regarding an incident on a Bus Éireann bus. The defendant was intoxicated and carrying alcohol on the bus. When the driver asked Killian to get off the bus he refused and became aggressive.
Killian was arrested and brought to Longford Garda Station.

The defendant's solicitor, Patrick Carthy, said that although his client has no previous convictions there is a matter to come before Mullingar Circuit Court in December.

The court was told Killian is under the supervision of the probation service. Mr Carthy stated that his client was “losing his ways” describing this as “something he very much needs to address”.

Judge John Brennan said it was important to canvas the views of the victim of the incident: “Being a bus driver is difficult.”

The defendant was remanded on continuing bail to appear before the court on February 7, 2023 when a victim impact statement from the driver will be finalised and to give the opportunity to monitor the progress of the Circuit Court matter.
