Nominations sought from Longford for Garda Youth awards

Anne Kenny (Foroige & Big Brother/Big Sister Mentor), Superintendent Seamus Boyle, Geraldine Maughan (National Special Achievement Award winner) and Kathleen Maughan

The fifth annual Longford/Roscommon Garda Youth Awards, in association with Longford and Roscommon County Councils who are sponsoring the initiative again this year, have been launched.
The Longford/Roscommon Garda Youth Awards celebrate outstanding young people between the ages of 13 and 21 years.

An Garda Síochána, Longford/Roscommon, in conjunction with Longford and Roscommon County Councils recognise that a lot of good work is being done by young people in every community in the two counties.

The nomination process is now open and An Garda Síochána in Longford and Roscommon are inviting the public to nominate a young person they know, who was committed to making a difference to their Community during 2022.

The Longford/Roscommon Garda Division were delighted to have had a National Winner last year.
Geraldine Maughan from Longford was a winner in the Special Achievement Category.
Geraldine suffered horrific injuries and required hospitalisation which affected both her physical and mental health.

Geraldine required intensive rehabilitation to regain the ability to walk again. Geraldine’s determination to fully recover led her to complete in the Women’s Mini Marathon and she is back playing sport.

Geraldine said, “The Garda Youth Awards was a brilliant experience and it brought out the best in me. When I was nominated I didn’t expect to be one of the winners, I would have been happy with the nomination. On the night of the Awards, I was both excited and nervous but just the experience would have been great for me.”

Gardaí will be distributing nomination forms to schools, youth groups and voluntary organisations right across the counties of Longford and Roscommon via email in the coming weeks.
These forms may also be requested from Roscommon.GardaYouthAwards @garda.ie or may be downloaded on the Garda website and also from the Longford and Roscommon Local Authority websites.

There are four nomination categories to choose from: Individual Award; Group Award; Special Achievement Award; Community Safety Award.

Nomination Forms can be emailed to Roscommon.GardaYouthAwards @garda.ie or can be posted to the Community Policing Unit, Boyle Garda Station, Co Roscommon.
All nominations must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
