A donation to a local charity could save a Longford woman from notching up a criminal conviction.

Claudia Boyle (27) of 35 Springlawn, Longford was before the court facing a charge that on January 18, 2022 at Dublin Road, Longford she assaulted Mary Kelly, and engaged in threatening and abusive behaviour.

Sergeant Mark Mahon gave details of the incident that brought the defendant before Longford District Court. Sergeant Mahon said the injured party was walking on Dublin Road towards the Gala Filling Station.

There was “an exchange of words” between Ms Boyle and the victim of the assault in which the defendant used “foul language” before pulling on the injured party's ponytail.

Sgt Mahon said the defendant had five previous convictions all for public order breaches, the last offence resulted in a conviction in Tuam District Court in 2017.

Solicitor Frank Gearty stated that his client has “moved on with her life” since this incident. He told the court the defendant has two children; aged three and 18 months.

Mr Gearty said Ms Boyle is now “in a good relationship” and the differences at the time with the injured party have been resolved.

The solicitor spoke of the defendant's battle with postnatal depression at the time and how she has been diagnosed with ADHD.

Mr Gearty said his client realises “she should not have done this” and told Judge Bernadette Owens the defendant's GP “has taken a proactive approach to treatment”.

He told the court Ms Boyle is now in employment one day a week.

Judge Owens accepted there was an “underlying background to the incident”. She said if the defendant makes a payment of €250 to Cian's Kennels she will take “a certain course”.

Mr Gearty said his client would be delighted to have the opportunity as she is particularly fond of dogs.

The judge then adjourned the matter to May 9 to allow the defendant time to put together the charity donation.
