No more bump in the road! Longford bridge pothole branded 'a danger and a safety concern', repaired at last!
The deepening pothole was deemed a safety hazard for those using the road.
If you've ever driven over the railway bridge in Longford town, you’ll no doubt be familiar with a particularly notorious pothole.
Fortunately, the pothole - which had become so bad, it was described as a danger and a safety concern - was today removed by council workers.

Longford Municipal District Cathaoirelach Kevin Hussey arranged for the issue to be sorted after receiving daily calls from road users about the matter.
He explained, “As someone who lives in the area and drives over that railway bridge multiple times a day, sometimes up to ten times, I didn’t need people to tell me how bad it had become because I could see first-hand just how dangerous it was.”
“While I was getting calls from residents about it on a daily basis, I was already well aware of the issues. The pothole had reached the stage where motorists were having to cross onto the opposite side of the road to avoid it, which was clearly a serious safety concern.”
He added, “This wasn’t a small repair job. Contractors had originally been due to carry out the work a number of weeks ago, but they were delayed on other projects, so a new contractor had to be appointed to get the work completed.”

“I’m delighted to see the repairs now finished. I want to acknowledge Peter and the Roads Team for their work in helping to get this resolved. It’s a much-needed improvement for everyone using the bridge.”
Cathaoirleach Hussey said it was imperative the problem was sorted given how busy the road had become in recent months. He is now also calling for another safety measure to be implemented on Park Road.
He explained, “Park Road has also become a much busier area with the addition of the skate park and the Sunflower Playground, bringing a lot more traffic through the area.”
“At yesterday’s council meeting I submitted a Notice of Motion seeking a raised pedestrian crossing on Park Road beside the old Steels shop. I believe that measure will improve safety, help manage traffic and make the area safer for everyone, particularly families and children using the local amenities.”
