They organised hampers, said farewell to much-loved exchange students and got into a poetry final
National Glory in Poetry Aloud Final!
Congratulations to Roisín Duke, Fifth Year, who became the very first student from Meán Scoil Mhuire to receive the prestigious accolade of Senior Category winner in the Poetry Aloud National Final of 2025. Poetry Aloud is an all-island poetry recital competition which is held annually in the National Library of Ireland. Meán Scoil Mhuire has enjoyed great success in this competition with numerous students having reached the final in previous years, however this is the first time that the school took the prestigious first place position. Roisín recited “Those Winter Sundays” by Seamus Heaney as her prescribed poem and “Connolly” by Liam McGabhann as her optional poem.

Madeline Denniston, Third Year, also successfully reached the final and performed phenomenally, in what was a tough Intermediate Category. Roisín received a prize of €300 and the school received a €300 book token. Congratulations to Ms McCaffrey, the students’ mentor in this competition!
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Food Hampers
We would like to thank all members of our school community for their generous donations to our St Vincent de Paul Hamper food appeal. Throughout December students and their parents were asked to donate non-perishable food items to support the work of the society. The Christmas spirit of kindness and generosity is certainly alive in Meán Scoil Mhuire based on the amount of beautiful hampers we were able to present to St Margaret last week. Decorated by our TY students with the assistance of Ms Gilhooley, we hope these hampers help members of our community to enjoy a happy Christmas!
Christmas Talent Show
Our annual Christmas Talent Show was held on December 18th in the school gym. This event offers students the opportunity to showcase their impressive talents and this year’s events certainly exceeded our high expectations. From singing to dancing, the show included renditions of Christmas classics, a moving, emotional performance of Adele’s “Make You Feel My Love”, beautiful instrumental pieces, a TY teacher inspired dance, a guest appearance by The Spice Girls who coincidentally appeared very similar to some staff members and a high-tempo, polished Sixth Year finale High School Musical inspired number!
We would like to sincerely thank Ms O’Brien for the Trojan work on the Christmas Talent Show and thank the amazing TY classes for their organisation of the event! A big thank you also to our hosts Mia and Shauna for their witty jokes and introducing all the acts so professionally!
Christmas Jumper Day
On Tuesday, December 16th, the corridors of Meán Scoil Mhuire were filled with Grinches, reindeers, gingerbread men and any number of festive themed Christmas jumpers as we celebrated our annual Christmas Jumper Day. Students donated €2 each on the day and all funds raised go towards supporting the invaluable work of Pieta House. Well done to all involved and a sincere thank you to our wonderful Student Council and Ms Clancy, who promoted and organised the day!
Adiós
It was with sad hearts that we bade farewell to a number of our Spanish exchange students who joined us for one school term this year. We wish these students all the best as they depart for home.
Christmas Carol Singing
Our TY students were delighted to visit the Convent of Mercy on Thursday last to sing carols for the residents there. Both the students and residents enjoyed the festivities, and the joy of Christmas was truly alive all afternoon!
