The disco received positive feedback after the May one, with a goal to have them every two to three months
The Over 30s Disco has become quite popular in Longford. As part of increasing night life in the town, and boosting the economy, cousins Dave Hussey and Cllr Kevin Hussey have been organising disco nights. The cousins, who are both experienced DJs, are “proud Longford men,” as quoted by Dave, and wanted to create something new.
“I suppose we came up with the idea to try and provide something different for that age group,” explained Dave. “The conversations we had with people were that most nightclubs run late and there’s nothing new. The concept behind them is early clubbing. So, myself and Kevin Hussey (cousin and councillor) discussed hosting one.”

Planning on having another in October, with a DJ from Dublin to do a throwback night, there is hope to have a mix of everything.
“We’ll just have to finalise the details. The idea is to have them recurring every two to three months to give something a little different,” added Dave. “At the moment, it’s around €10 and the booking fee is through Eventbrite. The Christmas one will be around €15, but what we’re delivering will be added value.
“We buy 100 glowsticks and give them away. Whoever gets them gets them. We had a photographer to have a memory of the night. We try to add on and build something.”
Such events are not unique to Dublin. Dave explained that there is a 30+ club in Dublin as well, so it is becoming a wider idea nationwide.
Saying that the one back in May was a huge success and that the cousins received positive feedback, Dave said that it was all about letting the over 30s experience the clubbing scene again. Other nights that they have looked into are a combined speed quiz and music bingo night, which would be for any age.

“We’re geared behind the late night scene in relation to our jobs but looking at stuff that can appeal to other markets. Begin earlier and finish earlier. Those are our core goals.”
“It’s great to make a difference when we can, that’s bringing people out and offering something different.”
