15-year-old John Nevin from Longford town was a winner of his division in the Box Cup in Denmark last weekend, beating a strong opponent from the Czech Republic national team in the final.

A son of former Longford Slashers senior football championship medal winner Martin, it was a fine achievement by John who overcame the challenge of a Norway opponent in the semi-final.

Young Nevin was competing against older boxers in the U-17 category and the Irish champion was joined in Denmark for the International tournament by fellow members of the Olympic Boxing Club in Galway.

A student in St Mel’s college, John would like to thank the principal Malachy Flanagan for all his support along with his sponsors in Longford, not forgetting his coaches Mike Mongan and John Mongan and Peter for all their assistance over in Denmark.
