A young man caught with €50 worth of cocaine has been directed to engage with the Probation Services.

Daniel Kuponiyi (20) of Shannon Park, Edgeworthstown, pleaded guilty at Longford District Court to being in possession of the drugs at Main Street, Longford on November 28, 2023.

Sgt Conor McShane said Gardaí observed him acting suspiciously and they approached him as they intended to search him.

However, the suspect became belligerent, ran away and he was later arrested.

A white substance, later found to be cocaine, was discovered hidden inside the sleeve of his jacket.

The defendant had no previous convictions.

Defending Bríd Mimnagh said the drugs were for Mr Kuponiyi's own use and Judge Bernadette Owens subsequently decided to request a Probation Report to get more information.
