Longford man was highly abusive to gardai

A man was shouting and roaring at two other men after he drank too much around the time of his mother’s anniversary, the recent sitting of Longford District Court heard.

Before the court was Peter Briody, 33 Padraic Colum Heights, Longford who was charged with intoxication in a public place and threatening abusive words or behaviour at Ballymahon Street, Longford on November 2nd last.

Garda Sergeant Enda Daly, for the State, said: “He was highly abusive to gardai and told them to f**k off. He had to be arrested.”

The defendant had a number of previous convictions for road traffic and drugs offences.

Defence solicitor Brid Mimnagh said the incident occurred around the time of the anniversary of the defendant’s mother. “Unfortunately he began drowning his sorrows,” she said.

“He apologises for his bad behaviour and drunkenness in public,” Ms Mimnagh said.

“He accepts he has a drink problem and is trying to deal with it,” she added.

A fine of €300 was imposed on the threatening behaviour charge with the intoxication offence marked proven and taken into consideration.
