Cross Country

Well done to the children from St Mel’s NS who were out in force last Saturday in Moyne for the Connacht Primary Schools Cross Country Championship. The standard of competition was a big step up from the Longford race as the children were competing with the county winners from Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon & Leitrim. St Mel’s led the way in the entire county winning three Connacht medals (only 6 medals were won by the Co Longford schools).

Congratulations to Cian McPhillips who ran an excellent race to win Gold in the 5th & 6th class boys 1000m. He was tucked in with the lead group of from the very start and they maintained a very fast pace for ¾ of the course. Cian knew the exact time to make his move, he ignited and sprinted uphill, going flat out to the finish line.

Cathal Farrell ran an amazing race in the 3rd & 4th Class boys 800m and finished 4th. Cathal shot off from the starting line and took the lead position, maintaining a very fast pace with over 130 hot on his heels. This was a wonderful achievement for Cathal who really pushed himself.

Brendan Finnan came home with a medal in the same race for 9th place. Cathal & Brendan, Jack Gallagher, Daniel Hayden, Adam Reilly & Diarmuid Farrell were placed 4th in the 3rd & 4th Class Boys team category which was the highest placed Longford team on the day. It is evident that running is becoming much more popular as children from Ardagh, Stonepark, Colehill, Ballymahon, Killoe, Dromard & Fermoyle schools also took part.

Thanks to Caitriona Hayden, Sinead Gallagher, Leslie Finnan & Paddy McPhillips for training and organising the Ardagh team of 17 children: Sarah McPhillips, Anna Hayden, Katie Quinn, Laura Farrell, Melissa O’Kane, Zoe Kenny, Sarah Thompson, Katie Lynch, Diarmuid Farrell, Adam Reilly, Daniel Hayden, Brendan Finnan, Jack Gallagher, Cian McPhillips, Cathal Farrell, Dylan Coady & Dylan Reilly.
