We would like to send our condolences to the family and friends of the late Edmund Shanley, Bauvelt USA and formerly from Clooncolry who passed away on October 1 last. Edmund was a pillar of the Irish-American community in Rockland. He was a founding father of the Rockland Irish American Cultural Centre. The Centre was a place he loved to go for social gatherings, family parties and card games. In his youth he represented County Leitrim in the Irish GAA, and carried his love and passion for the game with him to America, where he was a part of the team that secured the land for the founding of the Rockland County GAA. He took great pride watching his grandsons play on his ‘field of dreams’.

He was a long time member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 5 and past President of the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association. He was also a member and past President of the New York Leitrim Society. He was a devout and active member of the St. Catherine’s Parish. Undoubtedly his favourite day of the year was St. Patrick’s Day when he would march with Leitrim in the parade. Edmund was laid to rest in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Nanuet USA on October 4last. May he rest in peace.

Lotto win

There was great excitement in the locality last week when word filtered through that there was a major lotto win in the area, soon it was announced that a syndicate from local factory Vistamed were the winners, great news so congratulations to you all especially those of you who I know namely Lisa McGowan, Gerry Boyle, Chris Healey, Linda Frayne, enjoy your win. Finally just to say that when RTE television came to Rooskey to report on the win they could not have given a more negative report of the village they just might have kept it a little upbeat on such a happy occasion.
