Eucharistic Adoration

The Diocesan Committee for Eucharistic Adoration are holding a training day for Eucharistic Adoration, on Sunday, October 20, in the Pastoral Centre of St Mel’s College, Longford starting at 2.30pm. You are invited and welcome to attend.


Warmest congratulations to Northern Gaels on being crowned Minor “A” Champions on Sunday, October 6 where they defeated Killoe by 1-17 to 3-7 in Pearse Park. Special congratulations to Nigel Rabbitte who won Man of the Match and also well done to the panel, management, selectors and all others involved.

Pastoral Council

A special Deanery Mass will be celebrated on Monday, October 21 in Granard Church with Holy Mass at 7.30pm.

Parish Draw

The next Parish Draw takes place on Friday, October 18 in Abbeylara after the 7.30pm. Mass. You are welcome to attend the draw. Any monies due to the draw, please hand in before then.

Servers Clothes

Any server who has finished serving and no longer requires their serving clothes (black and white) are kindly requested to consider leaving them into either Abbeylara Church or School for new servers to wear.

Fashion Show

The committee of Vincent de Paul Granard will host a Fashion Show on Tuesday, October 22 in the Community Centre Granard. The show will commence at 8pm.

Gallant 15KM Challenge

The 10th annual Gallant 15km Challenge in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice Cavan takes place Saturday, October 26. The main sponsor is MacManus Pharmacies Cavan. People can walk, run or cycle the 15km from Cavan to Cornafean or choose the smaller course of Ballinagh to Cornafean. Over the previous nine years the Challenge has been an outstanding success raising €262,000 for this wonderful cause. Cavan Rugby Club Choir and Local Artists perform in Concert in the Community Centre, Aughnacliffe on Friday, Octobe 18 at 8pm. Proceeds will go towards St Thomas Church Columbkille Restoration Fund. Admission fee is €10 and everyone is welcome.

Country Markets

Granard Country Markets continue in the Community Centre every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11am and as winter approaches the firewood is back in stock along with the usual Breads, Jams, Eggs and Crafts.

Breffni Challenge 2013

Thank you to everybody that supported Johnny and Fiona Macken in the Breffni Challenge 2013. To everybody who sponsored us for the cycle in August, the many people that came to our fundraising night recently in the Boomerang Bar, and to all who donated spot prizes and money on the night. We are delighted to be able to present a cheque to the total of €6,120 to the Breffni Challenge who in turn present this along with all the other funds raised to the Friends of St Luke’s, Cavan Homecare and the Breast Cancer Research Centre.

A Diary is available at Granard Area Action Group office to enable local voluntary groups and fundraising events to log their forthcoming activities for the year so as to help co-ordinate events successfully and to avoid duplication where possible.

Slimming World

Slimming World Edgeworthstown is getting ready for the party season. Is there a dress or a suit that you would love to wear this year? Would you love to be one or even two stone lighter unwrapping those pressies? If so, come along to St Mary’s Community Centre, Granard Road every Wednesday at 5.30pm & 7.30pm. Longford Choir

On Sunday evening November 3, Longford County Choir will perform a special concert in St. Mary’s Church in Granard and they will be joined by the ever-popular Mulligan Sisters and also by many talented youngsters from the local schools in the parish of Granard. Tickets for this concert are on sale and all proceeds go to Lus Na Greine Family Resource Centre.

The Quare Land

In an effort to raise finance and in order to ensure that Granard will have Christmas lights for the streets of the town during the festive season a Fundraising night will be held in the Bay Horse on Saturday, October 26. There will be music and a fancy dress on the night with prizes of €500, €300 and €200. There will also be other various spot prizes on the night. Tickets are on sale at €5 each or a book of 20 for €100 in various shops and from committee members.

Pre-Employment Course

Are you unemployed and trying to get back to work then this course could be of interest to you. It will commence on November 4 for a period of six weeks in Lus na Greine, Granard. It will start at 9.30am and finish at 1.30pm. It will be practical hands on course with modules such as upholstery, stone craft and horticulture etc information, CV preparation and interview skills. 4x4 Challenge

Team Feely completed the 4x4 Challenge in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital on weekend of October 5. The team started off from Nenagh on Saturday morning and spent the day navigating through Tipperary and Clare. Saturday night they camped in the Burren and Sunday they travelled through Galway, Mayo, Leitrim and on to Cavan. This is the 9th year for the Challenge and €35,000 has being raised with still some money to come in. Team Feely hope to have €4,000 raised in total. Angie McNulty from Temple Street Fundraising Office joined the 30 teams, which took part in this year’s event. Three teams from Granard Competed and all three teams performed very well and brought home some trophies. David and Brian Feely were the overall winners of the event, David Feely and Tracey Mulvey were runners up on Day Two and Keith O’Farrell (Ferriskill) and James Moran (Legan) were the winners of the Night Navigation Section on the Saturday night. This was a great achievement for the three local teams that were competing against teams from every corner of Ireland and one UK based team. So well done to all involved! The Feely Team would like to thank the local community for their support and to the many people that came to their fundraising night in Crawford’s Bar on 28 September last.

Night of History

Cllr Micheal Carrigy is organising a night of history on Friday, October 18 at 8pm in the Greville Arms Hotel, Granard. The topic for the night is Michael Collins, his life and his links with Longford and Granard in particular. Admission is €10 which covers refreshments etc. Proceeds from the night go towards maintaining Collins grave in Glasnevin Cemetery. Doors open at 7pm. Contact Micheal on 087 2915072.

Relics of St Anthony

They above Relics are coming to Ireland from Thursday 17 to Friday 25 October. For dates and venues visit . This year marks the 750th anniversary of the discovery of the relics of Saint Anthony by St. Bonaventure. A remarkable fact because here we are centuries later and St Anthony still walks with us on our journey of faith, encouraging and inspiring us every step of the way. Fr Mario Conte will accompany St Anthony’s Relics to Ireland. He will then bring the Relics to the UK from Saturday, October 26 to Sunday, November 3.

Longford Toastmasters

Longford Toastmasters are looking for new members to join our club. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month in The Longford Arms Hotel from 8.20pm until 10.30pm.
