A very special fund-raising event takes place in North Longford on the first weekend in March as all the community gather to celebrate the life of Cian Smith, Glenmore, Aughnacliffe who passed away in February 2011, at the early age of 13. Cian, pictured right, son of Frank and Sinead Smith, always lived life to the full, bringing great joy to everyone with his very special talents.
During his months of illness, the family received wonderful support from everyone and in particular from “Make A Wish” Ireland who granted a very special wish for Cian. The memories of this time will live on forever. “Make A Wish” Ireland has one simple aim – this is how they express it: “We grant the wishes of children aged between 3 and 17 years living with a life threatening medical condition, to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy”. Since its inception in 1992, “Make A Wish” in Ireland has granted wishes for over 1000 brave children. All of the proceeds of “Celebrate Cian” will go to this marvellous charity to enable them to continue providing long-lasting, happy memories for many more families. Since early January the whole community of North Longford has been greatly supportive, distributing raffle cards, sponsoring prizes, contacting friends and relatives as they book their tables for the “Come Dine With Me” events. This has been extended to two nights due to popular demand.
The first night (Friday 1st March) is being held in “The Breffni Arms” in Arva with a meal at 8pm and dancing later to “Nite Fever”. On Saturday 2nd March at 8 o’clock, “The Piker’s Lodge” Gowna is the venue for our second “Come Dine with Me” evening and music is supplied by the “Dance On” band. A Heinekan Cup Jersey, signed by the
2012 Leinster Team and All Ireland champions 2012 Donegal jersey (also signed), a Kilkenny hurling champions (2012) signed jersey and a signed Celtic FC jersey are all to be auctioned at these events. All tables have been fully booked. However, everyone is most welcome to come along for the entertainment later, on both evenings. Tickets will be available at the door for 10 euro with all proceeds going to “Make A Wish”.
The events of the weekend will build to an exciting climax with the Fun Football match which takes place in Pairc na nGael, Dromard on Sunday 3rd at 2pm. Cian loved to play basketball, soccer and Gaelic, both at school and at club levels and this match features two sides made up of his teammates in these sports. This will be a match with a difference!.
There will be many surprises with mystery guests dropping in, entertaining commentary, refreshments etc but without a doubt the highlight of the day will be the arrival of both the “Sam Maguire” and “Liam McCarthy” cups. Also, the raffle for the prizes which have been promoted since January will also take place at the match and all in all, a great evening is guaranteed for all who come.
Do come along and help to commemorate Cian in a spirit of fun, raising funds for a charity which does marvellous work. Admission to the Fun Football Match is optional – all donations to “Make A Wish” will be greatly appreciated.
