Happy Christmas: I would like to wish all our readers and everyone who sends me local notes a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

Christmas Tree: A beautiful Tree and Crib was erected last Saturday in the village. We would like to thank PJ Reilly for donating the Tree and for the people who helped on the day.

G.F.C Table Quiz: A table quiz will take place this Friday next the 21st of December in Crawford Pub Abbeylara at 9.30pm. The table quiz will be run by the Abbeylara G.F.C players. Your support is appreciated.

Santa Clause: Santa Clause will be arriving in Abbeylara Village on Sunday 23rd of December. Santa will be making a big journey from the North Pole so he expecting all boys and girls to be very good. We expect to see Santa around 3pm.

Fireside Tales: On a section of Fireside Tales Barney Gilligan late of Cooldoney gives us a description of life as a child living in the parish of Abbeylara. He talks about big Houses in the area such as “Fernborough House” and “Newgrove House” and that Abbeylara Village was once owned by a man known as Captain Ball. Life was so different back then with the introduction of Compulsory Tillage, New Ration Books etc. He tells of pig fairs in Ballywillan remembers when you had no clock to tell the time was to watch out for the train from Multyfarnham to Ballywillan. Fireside Tales is a great read and is on sale in Jimmy Donoghues Granard for €20.

Gun Club: The Gun Club are holding their Annual Christmas Draw and Party in Crawford’s Lounge on Saturday the 22nd of December, music on the night is by Na Fianna. Tickets for their draw are now on sale by club members and in local shops, 1st prize €500, 2nd prize €300, 3rd prize €200 and 4th prize €100; tickets cost €2 each or 3 for €5. Senior Citizens Christmas Party: Sincere thanks to all who attended the Senior Citizens Christmas party on Sunday 9th December in Crawford’s; to the organisers, those who helped on the day itself with Holy Mass, the Christmas dinner & the entertainment, Tina and her staff for their help and use of the premises and all others who helped in any way.

New offertory Boxes of Envelopes: A box was made out for each family however a few are missing. These boxes belonging to someone else may have been taken by the wrong person or taken to be passed on but didn’t get done. Please check your box to see if your name is on it or is it for some one else. Please let us know if you have being using the wrong box. Or if you have forgotten to pass on the box you may have taken for someone else, please do so. Thank you.

Confessions Penitential Service: Takes place on Wed 19th Dec. in Abbeylara at 8pm. A number of visiting priests will be available for individual confessions. You are invited and very welcome to attend this celebration which will help us prepare spiritually for the Birth of Christ.

County Longford Rural Transport: Longford Community Resources Ltd (LCRL) manage and administer the Rural Transport Programme, which covers the rural regions of County Longford. Many thanks to all the passengers and stakeholders who have supported, and indeed campaigned for the continuation of the Programme throughout the year.
