Our Parish Church
“In 1861, Father Thomas Fitzgerald, (a native of Cartrongeeragh, Longford) was appointed parish priest of Clonguish and was given the task of building a new parish church. An extended site was obtained where the old chapel was located and a new church was planned, facing the street with an area to accommodate a parochial house and gardens. This included outhouses and a paddock for the priest’s horse. The Earl of Granard donated the site. The noted architect Mr. J.J. Mc Carthy was commissioned to design and supervise the building. The Countess of Granard paid his fee of £75. He was a pupil of Pugin and his design reflected a strong Victorian Gothic influence. Construction took over three and a half years and the dedication ceremony took place on December 4th 1864. The bishop, Dr. Kilduff performed the dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the Immaculate Conception, and Rev. Dr. Dorrie, Bishop of Down and Connor, preached the sermon”. (From: The Parish of Clonguish Its People & Its Culture – Patrick J. Murphy).
Our church is 150 years old this year. This anniversary will be celebrated through the coming year starting next Sunday, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The parish baptism registers dating from that time will have pride of place in the sanctuary at all the masses.
We welcome into the Christian Community last weekend Eoghan Peter McGuinness, Cahanagh and Seán Patrick Manning, Clonellan. We send our very best wishes to both families.
