AUGHABOY CEMETERY: A short history on Aughaboy cemetery Killoe Co Longford which is in existence now for 50 years this year. It came into being because the old Killoe cemetery could not accommodate any further graves. The search for a new graveyard began in around 1960 – 61 initiated by the late Very Rev Fr O’Donnell RIP who was the parish priest in Killoe at that given time and received great assistance from the late Thomas Mahon RIP, Aughaboy Killoe who was the local Fianna Fail county councillor for the area at the time. The Heslin brothers Johnny and Tom were approached with the view to procuring a site for the new cemetery and it was agreed to sell the site to Longford County Council for the princely sum of £100 sterling (a small enough sum, even at the time). The next stage was to secure a contractor to erect boundary walls, gates and prepare it to be utilised as a cemetery. The contract was awarded to the late Tom Lennon RIP, Clontumpher, Killoe who duly carried out the work despite enduring very severe weather conditions to attain completion. This was made possible around the middle of February 1963 and by a remarkable coincidence the first person to be buried in the new cemetery was none other than Tom Heslin RIP who was due to be buried in the old Killoe but no space was left in the family plot. He died on the 11 March 1963 aged 81 years. Unfortunately Councillor Thomas Mahon RIP passed away on the following day 12 March 1963 aged 47 years who had been for some time ill himself. A lot of work has been carried out within the cemetery over the past 10 years both professionally and voluntary so it’s with great credit to all concerned. This history has been written through the memory of a 20 year old at the given time and we thank Kevin Walsh for his detail to memory. Johnny Heslin deceased February 1975 aged 86 years RIP. Plots on left side of cemetery.
