CREDIT UNION QUIZ - The annual Credit Union Schools Quiz was held recently in Hotel Castlepollard. Sixteen teams representing National Schools in the area took part.

Whitehall National School won the U.13 competition. The Whitehall team was Eion Commins, Charles Flynn, Adam Leonard and Alan Fagan. Collinstown National School won the U.11 competition. The Collinstown team consisted of Nicholas Isdell, Eoin Daly, Aaron Hill and Killian Hogan. The winning teams will represent Castlepollard Credit Union in the Regional Final which will be held in Moate on Friday, March 4th.


Parents wishing to enrol pupils for Scoil Dhiarmad, Whitehall, are reminded that the closing date for receipt of applications is Monday, February 28th. Application forms are available from the school and enrolment will be in accordance with school enrolment policy.


Castlepollard Gardening Club are holding their first meeting of 2011 on Thursday next, February 24th, at 8.00pm in the Parish Centre, Church Street, Castlepollard. Guest speaker on the night will be Jim Donohoe who will give a general talk on bees and bee-keeping. The competition on the night will be for the best bunch of Spring flowers.


Castlepollard Library are introducing a new competition to replace the St. Patrick’s Day Badge Competition. The new competition will be to design a St. Patrick’s Day Postcard to include the slogan “as Gaeilge”, and will celegrate both St. Patrick’s Day and Seachtain na Gaeilge. Entries must conform to standard postcard size, and must be returned to Castlepollard Library on or before Monday, February 28th, at 5.30pm. There will be three categories for competitors, 4 - 6 years, 7 -9 years, and 10 - 12 years. All entries must include on the back of the entry the name and address of entrant, phone number, age and school.


Tickets for Fore Motorcycle Racing Club’s Annual Draw, which takes place on on the Bank Holiday weekend, Sunday, May 1st, in the Anchor Bar, Castlepollard, are now in circulation. First Prize is 1000 euro. The Club’s main event once again will be the Race of the South, which will be held at Walderstown, Athlone, on the 9th and 10th of July. The Club are going to launch a Tractor Draw to coincide with the Race of the South meeting in July, and the launch will take place at the North Westmeath St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Castlepollard on Thursday, March 17th.


Next Sunday, February 27th, sees Whitehall Community Centre, Whitehall, Castlepollard, hosting an Information and Open Day, starting at 3.00pm. There will be activities and demonstrations catering for all ages and interests. Among the performers on the day will be Ringtown GAA Scor na nOg Group, musicians and performers from Comhaltas, local people demonstrating traditional skills, arts and crafts. Pool and table tennis competitions will take place throughout the day, while members of Castlepollard Bowls Club will give instructions and tips on the game. Members of the Active Age Group will be on hand to teach card games, and representatives from the local hurling, football and walking clubs, as well as the Ladies Group, will be on hand to offer information on the various meetings and activities they have to offer. The afternoons activities will be finished off with the Ringtown Lotto Draw
