Shed fire

Shed fire

On Monday last, July 7th, shortly after 9am. units from Castlepollard Fire & Rescue Service were alerted to a shed fire in stone farm buildings across from Castlepollard Community College, accessed from Kinturk Avenue. Firefighters using breathing apparatus and using CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) immediately set about tackling the blaze and preventing the fire from spreading into other parts of the structure, and also a garage structure in close proximity to the fire beside a residence on Kinturk Avenue. Firefighters sprayed CAFS onto the garage which protected it from fire damage. Castlepollard were assisted by a unit from Mullingar Fire & Rescue Service, in addition to a water tanker. The shed was cleared out using a tractor and front loader when the roof had collapsed inward, and firefighters continued cooling down the hay bales and making safe.

Residents and businesses in and around Castlepollard and North Westmeath in general are urged to exercise caution when dealing with callers claiming to be Water Meter Installers or Septic Tank Inspectors. Ask for identification, don’t be afraid to keep your door firmly closed, and ring Westmeath County Council using the numbers listed in the phone book to check any identification. Genuine callers will have no problem in co-operating. If in doubt for any reason, call the Gardai, friends, family and neighbours, and refuse to give any personal information concerning yourself or others. Another scam which has resurfaced are callers claiming to have diagnosed a fault remotely on your computer, and requiring bank/credit card details for the fee to fix the “problem”. There is no way to remotely diagnose a computer problem or virus. Refuse to give any personal information over the phone to anyone requesting you to do so. Any genuine caller representing a major organisation will not request such information.
