The next meeting of Castlepollard Gardening Club will take place on Friday night next, February 28, at 8pm in the Parish Community Centre, Church Street. Danny Dunne, guest speaker for the evening, will give a talk and presentation on some aspects of Spring gardening. The competition for the night is for the nicest bunch of snowdrops. All are welcome and the club would like to see some more people attending to justify getting speakers coming to share their knowledge. The club are also looking for ideas on topics and speakers for future meetings. The AGM will take place after the supper.
The local community were saddened to learn of the death, which took place peacefully at St. Maryâ€™s Hospital, Mullingar, on Wednesday, February 19th, of Mrs. Mary Finneran (nee Cullen), Mullingar Road, Castlepollard. The remains reposed at St. Maryâ€™s Chapel until removal on Friday, February 21st, for Requiem Mass in St. Michaelâ€™s Church, Castlepollard, at 12 noon. The funeral took place following Requiem Mass, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Oliver Skelly, PP, Coole, and internment took place immediately afterwards to St. Michaelâ€™s Cemetery, Castlepollard. The attendance at the removal, Mass and funeral was large and widely representative of the esteem in which the deceased was held.
Mary was a member of an old respected local family. Daughter of Thomas (a World War 1 veteran) and Rose, she had been predeceased by the death of her sister Bridget (Earley), beloved husband Michael (Mick), and nephew Noel. The deceased was of a quiet and friendly disposition, and a friendly and obliging neighbour. She was employed for many years in Kennedyâ€™s Hotel, Castlepollard, now Hotel Castlepollard, and was an avid reader. She will be sadly missed not alone by her immediate family, but by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. The deceased is survived by her niece Rosaleen, great nephew and nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
McCormackâ€™s Golf Society held a very well attended AGM in McCormackâ€™s Lounge, The Square, on Friday, January 17th. Officials elected for the coming year are:- President - Sean Montgomery; Captain - Frank Kearney; Hon. Secretary - Paddy McCabe Jnr; Treasurer - Ollie McCormack, Damien Cassidy; Handicap Committee - Paddy Cheevers, John McCabe, Declan Coffey; Directors of Golf - Brian McCabe, Jimmy Rynne; Ex-Officio - Donie Cassidy. The first outing will take place on 5th April in Headfort Ol, and club memberships can be paid to either treasurer before that date to alleviate the cost of the first outing. Courses for 2014 are 1) Kells Old, April 5th, 2) Luttrellstown Castle, May 10th, 3) Delvin Castle, June 14th, 4) Slieve Russell, July 19th, 5) Mullingar, September 27th, 6) Knightsbrook, October 18th.
The death took place on Friday, February 14th, at Tallaght Hospital, following a long illness bravely borne, of Mr. Matthew (Matt) Fagan, Templeogue, Dublin, and formerly of M.D.L., and Castlepollard. The remains reposed at the deceased residence on Monday, February 17th, from 4pm to 7pm, and removal on Tuesday, February 18th, to St. Pius X Parish Church, Templeogue, for Requiem Mass at 11am, followed by internment in Whitehall Cemetery, Castlepollard, at approximately 2.30pm. The attendance at the removal, Mass and funeral was large and widely representative of the esteem in which the deceased was held. The deceased is survived by his loving wife Mary, children Carl, Niall, Alan and Nina (predeceased by his daughter Nicola), sisters Perpetua, Margaret and Nuala, daughters-in-law Elaine, Lorraine and Orla, ten grandchildren, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
Owners of firearms in and around the Castlepollard area are asked to ensure that their firearms certificates are in date. Renewal forms should have been received by now, and completed and returned. One passport photo is required for each form. If shooting on someoneâ€™s land you must have a letter from the landowner giving full permission to do so. Forms must be sent to Castlepollard Garda Station only. If the station is unattended please put the form through the letterbox ensuring that the photo is included and all relevant sections are completed, all necessary attachments included, and the form is signed.
New comedy play
Saturday night, March 8th, sees the eagerly anticipated staging of a new comedy play, entitled â€œA Lock of Fierce Roarsâ€, from the pen of John McManus, writer of â€œThe Quare Landâ€. The venue is Whitehall Community Centre, Whitehall, Castlepollard, and the curtain goes up at 8pm. Writer John McManus is directing, and the play stars Niall Bruton, Paddy Dean, Neil Hogan, and Emer Oâ€™Carroll. For further information contact 086-1219766.
Dog owners are reminded to ensure that their pets are under control at all times now that lambing season is upon us once again. Even the most friendly and gentle family pet can become caught up in a pack, and the consequences can be harrowing and tragic. Landowners are entitled to take action against any dogs on their land threatening or worrying sheep.
