In a beautiful and touching ceremony Fr Francis Duffy was ordained new bishop of Ardagh & Clonmacnoise in St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral Athlone on Sunday last. Bishop Francis who is a native of Templeport was supported in the congregation by his mother who presented his ring for investiture, and also by other members of his family who carried gifts for Offetory. Among the parish representatives at the ceremony was Sean Reilly, Pastoral Council Sec. who had the honour of carrying the Bishop’s crozier in the procession into St. Mary’s. The principal celebrant was Cardinal Sean Brady assisted by Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Charles Brown and now retired Bishop Colm O’Reilly, 24 bishops also attended from the various dioceses and a very large number of priests from a wide geographical spread. For many this was an occasion to meet and greet and renew old acquaintances and in particular school pals who may not have met for a long time if at all since. Amidst all the pomp and splendour however, bishop Francis in his homily spoke about everyday Life. He said how precious each human life is “and especially the hearts of those who are in dark places, maybe facing difficult choices or feeling abandoned, alone or of little worth or struggling financially, as many are”. He also prayed for young victims, their families and their communities whose passion for life and whose sensitivity to others conveys the message that life is worth living which is the message of Jesus Christ.
Bishop Colm, who is now retired has been in office for the last 30 years since his consecration in 1983 when he replaced Bishop Cathal Daly now deceased. This Diocese has been in the spotlight for the past few years as the restoration of St. Mel’s Cathedral is ongoing following a fire at Christmas 2009. It is hoped to have this work completed by end of 2014. In the meantime the youthful Bishop Francis will settle in to his new role, for which he is well qualified, with a fresh energy, where he will be greatly supported by a hard-working team in Longford and throughout the diocese. We wish God’s blessing on him and his work and a happy retirement to our ever faithful Bishop Colm in the days ahead.
