This year in, conjunction with Respond, the Men’s Shed group have decided to embark on a major development.

The group are planning on turning the unused garden, at the side of the Respond Community Building, into a community garden, which can be enjoyed by the whole community.

The ambitious plans include a planting scheme, seating areas and a water feature.

Respond Housing Association are providing the bulk of the funds required plus the actual space, while the participants are supplying the expertise, skills and actual physical work that will go into developing of the area.

Operating since early last year the Longford Men’s Shed has been providing an outlet for men in the local community to meet-up on a regular basis.

The Men’s Shed philosophy is based on the concept that ‘men talk better shoulder-to-shoulder rather than face-to-face’ so men tend to relate better while working together on a project or on a shared interest.

The Longford Men’s Shed group gather in the Respond Housing Association Community Building in Townspark each Thursday between 7pm and 9pm and to-date they have been instrumental in an attractive planting scheme outside the Community Building in Townspark and also the construction of raised flower beds.

However, the project is not all about work, with a pool table, table football and comfortable seating area there is ample opportunity for relaxation and the kettle is always on too.

According to David Parslow of Respond: “We are very appreciative of the Men’s Shed, for giving so generously of their voluntary time and skills, as without their support this ‘community garden’ could not happen.

“Respond are delighted to be part of this project as it will provide a community space and an oasis of calm for all residents.

“The garden will also showcase the benefits of communities and groups come together.”

Respond are keen to point out that volunteers are very welcome to take part in this or any other project in the Townspark Estate.

Those interested in being part of the project can call to the Respond! Community Building in Townspark during the day or on Thursday evening.
