Mass of Remembrance

For all those victims who fought and died in World War 1 will be celebrated in the near future. You can place the names of victims on the Altar for this Holy Mass, or to be carried to the Altar at the Offertory Procession. People who fought in World War 1 and survived will also be remembered in this Holy Mass.

Cemetery Sunday

Thanks very much to everybody who came in such large numbers for Cemetery Sunday on Sunday, 27 July in Abbeylara. A sincere word of thanks to all the people who helped prepare for and took part in the various parts of Holy Mass, the Rosary and blessing of graves. A special word of thanks to Johnnie Flynn, who looks after the Cemetery during the year and to all the other people who helped to prepare the Cemetery for this special event. The Cemetery is looking very well and fittingly prepared for such an important occasion. Let us try to keep it this way. We thank God also for the beautiful Summer’s morning weather that we all enjoyed. May God have mercy on all our dead.

Irish Kidney Association

Tax Relief Scheme

From this year onwards everyone (including self employed) is eligible to assist the parish in its claim from Revenue. Thus it would be appreciated if those people who have received certificates for the Parish Tax Relief Scheme could complete the CHY3 certificate and return it immediately as completed CHY3 certificates have to be returned in order to claim the tax relief from Revenue for the Parish. Thanks very much to those people who have already done this.


A Benefit/Fundraising night will take place in Crawford’s Lounge on Saturday, 13 September in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital. There will be a raffle on the night for a hamper and numerous other prizes. All proceeds will go directly to the Hospital. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Olde Fair Day 

Ballinamuck Olde Fair Day is proud to announce their 2nd annual Fair Day on Sunday, 17 August, it promises to be even bigger and better than last year. 

Dancing Classes

Dancing Classes have commenced in the Park House Hotel, Edgeworthstown every Monday night from 8.30pm to 10.30pm. Learn to dance or improve your skills with Niall Doorly (TV3), Quick Step, Jive etc.


An open information evening on the Rainbows Support Programme for children experiencing loss through bereavement or family separation will take place on September 16 at 7.30 pm in Lus na Greine. This is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and others to learn about the benefits of the programme. Pilgrimage to Knock

Ardagh and Clonmacnois Diocesan Pilgrimage to Knock takes place on Sunday, 7 September. Ceremonies begin at 2.30 pm with the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Mass will be celebrated at 3pm. The Ray Flynn Mile 

The Co. Longford Tourism Committee is hosting the inaugural Ray Flynn Mile in Longford Town on Saturday, 23 August, in honour of the Longford native, who holds the Irish record for the 1500 meters and the mile, as well as a world record as part of an all-Irish 4*1 mile relay team. This race will be run on the Ballinalee Road, beginning at the roundabout and finishing at St. Mels Cathedral Car Park. The meeting point will be the enterprise centre on the Ballinalee road. The event will help form part of a running festival weekend in Longford that includes the 13th Annual Longford Marathon, scheduled for Sunday 24 August. The Ray Flynn event will include an elite race, an over 40s race, and juvenile races. People who just want to support the Tourism committee are most welcome and are invited to walk the mile with friends or family. Registration is €10 for adults and €4 for juveniles, and advance registration is available through Eventbrite, . People who are registered to run in the marathon on the following day can run the mile event at a subsidised fee of €5.

The Royal Canal Heritage Walk

As part of National Heritage Week, Longford Tourism is hosting a heritage walk along the route of The Royal Canal from Richmond Harbour in Clondra. Led by Fr. Tom Murray this interesting and informative walk will take in some of the beautiful scenery of the newly opened Royal Canal Cycleway. Refreshments will be served afterwards in The Richmond Inn, Clondra. The walk starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday evening 26 August.

Visitor Centre

Granard Visitor Centre Project – July Draw. Due to holidays, we had no public meeting this month. Instead we held our July Draw at our committee meeting, held on Tuesday last under the watchful eye of Garda Syl Keane, Granard Garda Station. An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office, Main Street, Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm. No appointment necessary.

25 Card Game

A 25 card game takes place every Friday night in the Bay Horse, Granard at 9.30pm for a bottle of whiskey. Everyone is welcome.

A new study in Trinity College Dublin is looking to gain an insight into the health and well being of those who care for their spouse/partner with Dementia. If you are a caregiver aged over 50 years and living with a partner who has Alzheimer’s disease or another form of Dementia you may be interested in taking part.
