Lough Derg

Lough Derg is a place of welcome where no one is judged and everyone is equal. You can begin your three Day Pilgrimage on any day from 29 May until 13 August. No need to book. Daily boats to the Island takes place from 10.30am until 3.00pm 7 days a week until 13 August.  There are regular pilgrimages throughout the season country wide. Enrolment evening

Granard Community Childcare Facility will have their Enrolment Evening for September 2015 for ECCE and Montessori on Thursday 28 May from 6.00pm to 7.00pm.


By now each family should have received your invitation to the Parishioners Evening on Friday, 29 May in our new Parish Centre. Any family that may not have received their invitation please contact your Pastoral Council representative. For catering purposes please let us know how many are attending this event. Thank you. The Proposed Format is as follows: Welcome, viewing, Holy Mass and Blessing of our new Parish Faith Centre, followed by refreshments.


Any person in our Parish who would like to bake a cake, scones, tarts, etc. for the Parishioners Evening on Friday, 29 May is welcome. Please leave your baking into the Parish Centre on Friday, 29 May from 6.00pm onwards or bring it with you to the event.

New Parish Centre

Abbeylara is the place to be on Friday, June 12, as the Community will celebrate the opening of the new Abbeylara Parish Centre. To mark the opening o f the new centre, Ireland Top Country Artist Derek Ryan and his Band will take to the stage for a night of music and dancing. Derek has taken the country world by storm since his debut song ‘God’s Plan’, which was a massive hit. Known for his energetic and entertaining live shows, Derek’s visit to Abbeylara is an extremely exciting event for the local village and tickets, which are no doubt in, demand. You can avail of the tickets from the following venues; the Music Centre in Longford, P.J Farrell’s in Abbeylara, Lynch’s Gala, Loughduff, Supervalu in Edgeworthstown and Images Hair Salon, Granard. Tickets cost just €15 each. Dancing takes place from 11.00pm to 1.00am.


The backing group for the Dance on 12 June in our Parish Centre is Mary O’Connor & Bernie Heaney, who will be playing from 9.00pm to 11.00pm before Derek Ryan, who is playing from 11.00pm to 1.00am.

Family Field Day

Abbeylara Field Day takes place this year on Sunday, 14 June. This year’s Field Day promises to be the best yet. More details in the coming weeks.

“Duck Racing” Fundraiser

Due to Longford playing Dublin in Croke Park on Sunday 31 May, we have decided to change our Duck Racing fundraising event to the 1st June Bank Holiday Monday at 5.00pm. Lines are on sale at €5 per Duck. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Poker Classic

On Sunday, 31 May next a Poker Classic will be held in the Breffni Arms Hotel in Arva starting at 6.00pm. Buy in cost 30 euro. This Classic is organised by friends of the late Martin Cadden and all proceeds go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund. All support will be greatly appreciated.


Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot now stands at €20,000. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early and enjoy the fun. IT COULD BE YOU!

Monster Bingo

A Monster Bingo will be held in Streete Parish Park on Monday 1st June at 8.30pm. This Bingo is in aid if the renovations that have been carried out on St. Mary’s Church, Boherquill. There will be prize money of €3,500 and in addition there will be a raffle on the night. All support will be gratefully appreciated.

Free Training

The Longford VTOS programme is now recruiting.  It offers full time business and computer training free of charge.  To qualify you must be over 21 and in receipt of a social welfare payment.  If you are interested, please contact Maeve Madden, VTOS Co-ordinator at 087 2050589. 

The Carers Association

The Carers Association are providing the QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Communications module on 28 May one day a week for five weeks in Tullamore, Co Offaly.  This is one of the mandatory modules towards the full healthcare award.   For more information please contact the training unit on 057 93 70221.

Glenn Brady Cycle

The 5th Annual Glenn Brady Cycle from Longford to Croagh Patrick will take place on Sunday, 31 May. We hope everyone can join with us again this year for a most enjoyable day out. Active Retirement

Yoga classes are continuing every Thursday morning at 11.00am. People wishing to travel with us on the 30 June day trip on the River Shannon and the Tullamore Dew Distillery  and evening meal on way home, contact Denis at 087 251 0072 as seats are filling up fast.  The seats for the Lissadell House day trip on 13 July are getting scarce; a deposit secures your seat.  Thanks to everyone who came to our Bealtaine Tea Party on Sunday last, it was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Cemetery Sunday

Cemetery Sunday takes place on Sunday, 7 June with Mass at 9.30am. Please ensure that the grass is cut and that the Cemetery is clean and tidy for this important occasion.
