The Tāin March

The Tain march commenced on 24 May in Rahtcroghan Co. Roscommon and passed through Granard on Tuesday, 26 May en-route to Omeath, Co. Louth re- enacting the walk lead by Queen Maeve to capture the Brown Bull at Cooley Peninsula. There are many events taking place on Monday, 1 June in Cooley.

Community Childcare

Granard Guild I.C.A. will hold their next meeting on Thursday, 4 June at 8pm in the Seminar Room of Granard Credit Union. Guest speakers on the night are Robert and Sydney Boaden from Snailey Garden. This is the last meeting before the Summer recess so all members are requested to attend. The guild are having their annual outing on Thursday 16 July starting off in Athlone with a cruise on the Shannon to Clonmacnoise; return to Athlone for shopping followed by evening meal in Glasson. Those who expressed interest in going on this trip are requested to bring €20 deposit to meeting. First Holy Communion

Congratulations to all the children from the Parish schools who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday last in St. Mary’s Church Granard.

Northern Gaels GFC

Owing to Longford playing Dublin in Croke Park on Sunday, 31 May, the novel fundraising event organised by the Club will now take place on Monday, 1st June at 5.00pm. A “Duck Race” will take place on the river at Derragh. Sponsor a duck for €5.00. Lines available from club officers. If your duck wins you will receive a valuable prize kindly sponsored by Cllr. P.J. Reilly. Your support will be appreciated.

Host Families needed

A group of Spanish students are hoping to attend a Summer Camp in Cnoc Mhuire, Granard from 4 - 24 July. This will be the first year for the camp in the Granard area and is an extension of the successful Moyne C.S. Summer Camp which has been running since 2011. Rath Mhuire Resource Centre

Moatsider’s Active Retirement Group: Our next meeting will be Thursday 28th May at the usual time of 2.30pm and we are planning to have a Yoga session with Patricia McCormack. We will also be planning our outings for the coming weeks. Thanks to Granard Library for the Bealtaine activities over the month of May. We always give a warm welcome to new members, so, if you would like to join us in any of our activities or events in the coming months, please get in touch. Rath Mhuire Men’s Social Club: The group meet every second Tuesday –May 26th – at 12.30pm – in Rath Mhuire Resource Centre. The club provides a great space for lots of activities, trips as well as good company and good food. Currently, the group is involved in Woodwork and Basket Making.

A Monster Bingo will be held in Streete Parish Park on Monday 1st June at 8.30p.m. This Bingo is in aid if the renovations that have been carried out on St. Mary’s Church, Boherquill. There will be prize money of €3,500 and in addition there will be a raffle on the night. All support will be gratefully appreciated.


The Longford VTOS (Vocational Training and Opportunities Scheme) programme is now recruiting. It offers full time business and computer training free of charge. St. Christopher’s Services

Volunteers wanted for the ‘Leisure Buddies Project’ in St. Christopher’s.

We are continuously recruiting for volunteers from around the county to give up their time once a month to befriend someone who attends St. Christopher’s and to meet up with them at a time that suits them both to attend a social activity of their choice. e.g. - going to the cinema; to the pub; a concert or just for a cup of tea and a chat. Country Market

The market continues every Friday morning in the Motte Enterprise Building, opposite Kearney’s garage from 8.30am to 1.00pm. Hanging baskets and planted containers are now in stock as well as the usual supply of bread, cakes, eggs, cards, crafts, firewood etc.

Stars in our Eyes

Saturday 6 June in the Longford Arms Hotel commencing at 8.30pm when St. Mary’s G.A.A. are hosting a Stars in our Eyes evening. A great evening’s entertainment is guaranteed and your support will be very much appreciated.


Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre, Granard at 8.45pm. Jackpot is €20K. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and Granard G.A.A. Clubs.Your support will be appreciated.

Festival postponed

The annual Open Air Festival in Dring due to be held on this Sunday 31 May has been postponed for this year. The annual church gate collection for St. Christopher’s will be held at the weekend at both churches. We would like to thank all our loyal supporters and look forward to next year’s festival.

Poker Classic

On Sunday 31 May a Poker Classic will be held in the Breffni Arms Hotel in Arva starting at 6.00pm. This Classic is organised by friends of the late Martin Cadden and all proceeds go to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund. All support will be welcome.

Siopa Lus na Greine

This Bank Holiday weekend we are having a big sale where we are selling everything in An Siopa for €1, yes, €1. Everything must go. This is for the whole weekend, starting Thursday through to Saturday, Come in and treat yourself for just €1. This week sees the 34th birthday of Granard Credit Union. Granard CU began it’s life in Market Street, from there we moved to our new purpose built premises in Barrack Street where we continue to lead the way with accessible local financial services in Granard and the surrounding area. Through good times and bad we have been here to support our members and give a helping hand to those who need it most, and will continue to do so into the future. Congratulations to Joanne Kiernan, Coolarty and Glen Kelly, Ballymaurice, Granard who were married on Friday, 29 May in St. Mary’s Church, Granard. A reception for family and friends followed in Crover House Hotel, Mountnugent. We wish the happy young couple every blessing for the future.


The death of Ellen Farley, Rathcor, Granard occurred peacefully at Mullingar General Hospital on Monday, 18 May. Wife of the late Michael. Her body reposed at Smith’s Funeral Home Granard on Tuesday afternoon until removal to St. Mary’s Church Granard. Funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday at 12 noon followed by burial in Granardkille old Cemetery. May she rest in peace. Ellen will be deeply regretted by her ten children, Mary, Dolores, John, Helen, Ned, Pat, Michael, Rose, Brendan and Ann, sisters Monica Beausang and May McGivney, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends to whom we tender our deepest sympathy.


Sympathy is extended to Larry Boland and family, Ballyboy, Abbeylara on the death of his mother, Kathleen Boland, Ballinabarna, Rosemount, Moate who died on 24 May. May she rest in peace.

Granard Area Action Group Ltd. sponsors of the local Community Employment Project have vacancies for 2 environmental workers in the villages of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta. Field Day

Abbeylara Field Day takes place on Sunday 14 June 2015 on the Coole Road Abbeylara Co Longford. Tractor Pulling, ladies tractor build competition, tractor musical chairs, pet farm, vintage display cars and tractors, threshing demonstration.  Music on the day, proceeds in aid of Parish Funds.
