Sixty years ago the annual commemoration to mark the execution of Allen, Larkin and O’Brien was held in Ballinagh, led by Drumcrow Pipers Band, an estimated 500 people marched from lower Main Street to McDermott’s corner where a guard of honour of the old IRA members were in charge of Mr Bernard Galligan, Kilnacreeva. On a specially excited platform were a large number of veterans of the war of independence. Mr Peter Conaty Kilsallagh presided and addressing the large gathering in Irish and English welcomed all present while other speakers included Sean Tully TD , Charles O’Reilly MCC, Laurence McMahon, Jack Tivnan and former Councillor Owen Smith. The torchlight procession which marched through the town caused plenty of excitement. Following many memorable speeches the night’s commemoration came to a close with the playing of the national anthem.
