Preparations are almost complete for the very first Love Longford festival, which takes place from Thursday, June 27 to Sunday, June 30.
“We’re going to turn Longford Town into an Arts town”, says event organiser and Longford County Arts Officer Fergus Kennedy. The Love Longford festival was an idea of Mr Kennedy’s, to show people how much character Longford has, and to “demonstrate how much talent is in the county”.
Events are planned throughout the town for the festival, and Mr Kennedy hopes that the weekend will allow people to “go away with a greater sense of pride in their county”. These events include pop-up art exhibitions by local artists, live music, literature, drama and a “Town Arts Trail”, which Mr Kennedy hopes will make the festival more interactive. One of the highlights of the weekend will take place on the Market Square on Saturday, June 29, when the “Midlands Biggest Ever Choir” perform.
Depending on this year’s festival, it is hoped that Love Longford will return. “It is a pilot project” Mr Kennedy explains, adding “we’d be delighted if it became a county-wide event.”
