First Friday

Friday, 1 May is the First Friday. The sick and housebound will be attended as usual. First Friday Confessions takes place in Abbeylara church at 7.00pm followed by First Friday Mass at 7.30pm.

New Parish Centre

Ireland Top Country Artist Derek Ryan and his Band are opening Abbeylara’s New Parish Centre on Friday 12 June. More details in the coming weeks.

Drama Group

The group are holding a 5K Walk/Fun Run/ Cycle in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Fund on Monday 4 May at 2.00pm.  Registration takes place from 12.30pm in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara.  Entry fee €10 per person or €20 per family.  Your support would be greatly appreciated.  Members of the Done and Dusted cast will lead the walk in full costume.  Entertainment in Crawford’s afterwards.

Dring Festival

The Annual Dring Festival will take place this year on 31 May on the shores of Lough Gowna in Dring car park. It is a day not to be missed! All proceeds on the day will go to St. Christopher’s in Longford.

Agricultural Show

The committee are hosting a major fundraising night at Longford Greyhound Track on Friday, 15 May next. First Race will be starting at 8.00pm. Tickets are priced at €10 and will be available from any committee member and also at various locations around the town. Raffle on the night with some excellent prizes. This is expected to be a big social gathering of all members and supporters of Granard Agri-Show and promises to be a great night with a few surprises in store so why not come along and join in the fun.

Ladies Mini Marathon

Training continues every Wednesday morning at Lus Na Greine Resource Centre under the stewardship of a professional trainer. We welcome and deeply thank those who may consider walking on behalf of the centre.

Gowna Church of Ireland invites you to join them for a Social evening of music, song and dance on Saturday 2 May from 9.00pm till late in Gowna Community Centre. Thanks to the lovely weather, all hands are on deck with the Community Employment /TUS workers out in force. There’s a lot done and a lot to do and it would be nice to have the locals give these people a hand.  Our village always looks well when the sunshine is around. If you have any new ideas how to make our village better let us know.

Active Retirement

Month of May, our Active Retirement group are holding their Sunday afternoon party in St. Bernard’s National School on 17 May from 2.00pm to 5.00pm. More update on this occasion next week.


Northern Gaels GFC are holding a “Duck Racing” fundraising event on Sunday 31 May at 5.00pm at Derragh River, Abbeylara. Lines are on sale at €5 per Duck. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Community Games

Our track and field day will take place this Sunday, 3 May in Mullinalaghta GAA pitch. 1st race is at 4.00pm. As there are a large number of children that take part can the parents please make sure that their child is on time and in the correct race, i.e. if your child is u10 they must be 9 or under as of the 31 July. Gun Club

Abbeylara Gun Club will hold their annual Open Clay Pigeon Shoot on Sunday, 3 May in the Shooting Grounds Derragh. Three traps, Sporting and DTL, €200 High Gun and Lite Pac Ltd Perpetual Cup. There is €760 in total prize money, commencing at12 noon and last entries 5.30pm. Your support kindly appreciated.

Darkness into Light

The 2nd annual Longford Darkness Into Light (DIL) Walk will take place on May 9 next at 4.15am in aid of the Pieta House. Pieta House provides free counselling to prevent suicide and self harm.
