Today is Ash Wednesday and is the first day of 40 days of Lent in preparation for the Christian festival of Easter. It is a day of fast and abstinence. Although the church doesn’t require the faithful to attend Ash Wednesday services, most Catholics make the effort to receive ashes as it symbolizes man’s return to dust. Ashes will be blessed and distributed during 9.30 am Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, and in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Mullahoran at 7 pm.
Trocaire; Boxes will be distributed through the local school and will be available in both churches next weekend.
Judging by the national media the country went all romantic last weekend for St. Valentine’s Day on Saturday but the romance may have been sidelined by the commercial aspect of the lead-up to the day. Shrove Tuesday yesterday was another commercial build-up for the humble pancake which has been the prelude to Lent for centuries and an old reliable when the cupboard is bare!

To Ciaran Brady and staff of John Brady Insurances, Drumcorr and now Killydoon on celebrating 40 years in the business. In the early 70s with the motor industry booming and household insurance becoming the norm John Brady Insurances set up by the late John (Gunner) was at the forefront based in his office in Drumcorr and ably assisted by his loving wife Nancy. In recent years the Company has further expanded under the direction of John’s son Ciaran to include the AVIVA agency when its office in Cavan town closed. Now based in Killydoon the business which employs 8 staff is a tribute to John’s foresight and hard work when one recalls that he cycled the country selling insurance in the early days. We wish continued success to Ciaran & family in the future.
