Music Classes have resumed in The Green every Saturday. We have a range of tutors who teach various instruments on site. Instruments taught include: Bodhran, Drums, Tin Whistle, Flute, Keyboard, Banjo, Mandolin, Fiddle, Guitar and Trad Guitar. Registration morning

There will be a Registration morning for the Filial Play Therapy on Tuesday, 30th September from 11am to 11.30am in the Green, Edgeworthstown. If you miss this opportunity you may contact Mary Mulvey, Rural Resource Worker with Longford Community Resources Ltd at 086-8536455 to make an appointment to register. This innovative programme will be delivered by Longford Community Resources Ltd in the Community House, 43 Cloverwell, Edgeworthstown starting on Wednesdays, starting on 8th October at 10am and will be finished by lunchtime. Filial Play Therapy teaches parents the skills to work with their 1-3 year olds.  After the initial assessment of the family, the therapist spends two or three weeks training the parents in the basic Filial Play Therapy skills.  Parents get to practice the skills several times before they hold the first play session with their child. Filial therapy can help children to express their feelings and fears through the natural activity of play.  Over time, children may: Understand their own feelings better, Become able to express their feelings more appropriately, Be more able to tell parents what they need, what is worrying them, Become more confident and skilled in solving problems as well as asking for help when they need it, Reduce their problem behaviours, Feel more secure and trust their parents more, Have a more healthy self-esteem and increase their self-confidence. Filial therapy can help parents to: Understand their child’s worries and other feelings more fully, Learn new skills for encouraging co-operation from their children

Enjoy playing with their children and giving them positive attention, Increase their listening skills and develop open communication with their children, Develop self-confidence as parents, Become more able to trust their children, Deal in new ways with frustrations in family life, Filial therapy can help parents and children to form closer and happier relationships. This programme will be delivered by Longford Community Resources Ltd and the coordinator is Anne Brennan MA, H Dip, PG DHE, MIACP, SIAHIP.  Anne is a staff member of the Children’s Therapy Centre, Tir na nOg, Ballymore, Co. Health Food made easy

This is a 6 session course, with all sessions having a practical cookery element. The programme is peer led by trained Food and Health instructors from the Food and Health Project. Groups are encouraged to gain hands-on experience of preparing and cooking basic health, good value tasty dishes. Groups also learn about the food pyramid and discuss balance in their diet, fats, fibre, shopping tips etc. A community Dietician meets with the groups on session 5 to answer any extra question that may arise during the course.

Older Person’s Network News

Superintendent Thomas Murphy and Granard Garda District invite Longford Older Person’s Network to an afternoon tea with the band of An Garda Siochana at St. Mary’s Community Centre, Edgeworthstown on Tuesday, October 7th 2014. Doors open at 3pm. Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Paul McDermott will give a short presentation on Crime Prevention and the concert will take place from 3.30pm to 5pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Free bus transport

Longford Community Resources Ltd has funded a bus to leave the Park Hotel, Edgeworthstown every Tuesday morning at 10.10am to allow people from Edgeworthstown and the surrounding area to attend the Gatekeeper’s Programme in Longford. The Gatekeeper’s Course is running in the Family Centre, Longford for 5 Tuesdays starting on Tuesday 7th October and continuing until Tuesday 4th November 2014. The bus will leave from the Longford Family Centre at 12.30pm after the course and arrive in Edgeworthstown at 12.45pm.
