The annual summer camp will take place in Mullinalaghta this year from Monday,11th August to Friday, 15th August for 4 – 7 age group. 7-12 years old will be catered for from Monday, 18th August to Friday, 22nd August. On this Saturday, 17th May, the Vigil Mass in St. Columba’s Church at 8.00p.m will be celebrated by Bishop Francis Duffy. Please give him a warm welcome. Following Mass all are invited to the community centre for tea and sandwiches. We ask everyone to make a special effort to attend as Bishop Francis would like to meet and chat the people.
Tidy Towns collection
This collection will be taken up at Vigil Mass on Saturday, 17th May. It is the only fundraiser for the Tidy Towns and helps to fund materials, petrol, PRSI etc. for the Scheme workers. If you are not able to donate at the church gate, you cane make your donation at Cloonagh P.O. The Community Scheme workers keep the village in great shape and with your help we want to be able to fund this worthwhile exercise.

As part of their fundraising activities the local ladies football club are holding a weekly draw based on the bonus ball in the main draw of the national lottery. Sheets are on sale in the local post office or are available from any club member. Match the bonus ball in Saturday’s night main draw and you will earn yourself €20. Lines are just €2. Six monthly tickets are available for €50 by contacting Marie Matthews. Your support would be very much appreciated each week. The winning number on Saturday May 10th was 26 with no winner.
On Sunday, 1st June, the Colmcille Branch of the Mentally Handicapped will hold their annual fundraising event at Dring Car Park on the shores of Lough Gowna in aid of St. Christopher’s Day Centre, Longford. For the past forty years the committee on a voluntary basis have worked tremendously to raise funds for this worthwhile cause. Unfortunately it has to mostly depend on voluntary donations. Mass for present and deceased members will be celebrated on site at 1.30p.m. From there on entertainment for all the family will continue for three hours plus. Many of Ireland’s top artists will perform here. They include Philomena Begley, Aidan Quinn and his six piece band, The Murphy’s, Noel Cassidy, Chuck Owens, Paul Lynch, June McLoughlin, Philip J Rogers, Jason McGilligan, Ciaran Rosney, Jane McNamee, David O’Reilly, The Brady’s, Seamus Sheridan and Frank Kilbride. As usual there will be plenty of amusements for the children such as face painting. There will also be ferret racing, cake stalls, fishing competitions with North Longford Anglers, baby show competition and much more. We remind you to mark this date in your diary.
The Longford Community Games games swimming final was held in Longford swimming pool on Monday, 5th May with ninety five swimmers from all over the county taking part. Abbeylara / Mullinalaghta achieved great success with two swimmers, Ciaran Scanlon and Aisling Scanlon winning gold in their respective events, U12 breast stroke and U10 backstroke. They will now represent their county at the national finals in August. Medals were also won by Siobhan Leonard ( silver in U12 breast stroke), Conor Leonard (bronze in U 12 freestyle) and Tomas Scanlon ( bronze in U8 freestyle) . Hard luck on Aoife Leonard who narrowly missed out on a medal.
On Friday, 30th May, a fundraiser head shave in aid of Lauralynn House, Ireland’s only children’s hospice and St. James’s Hospital Foundation will take place in Coy’s Bar, Longford. Starting at 9.30p.m Marion Prendergast and Jo Purkis from Killoe will be shaving their heads to raise money for these very worthy charities. There will also be leg waxing and a monster raffle. In memory of the late Mickey Shaughnessy, Graffogue, Ballinalee come along and enjoy the night while raising awareness for Cancer Research and Ireland’s children with life limiting conditions. With a popular DJ in attendance and complimentary food an entertaining night is guaranteed.
Local candidate John Reilly will hold his final election rally in the Angler’s Rest on this Friday, 16th May with DJ ‘Quarry’ spinning the discs. With Liam, a night of fun and craic is always on the agenda. All are welcome.
National Spring Clean -up Day
Many thanks to all who participated in a very successful Village Clean-up day on 29th April last. Thanks to the school children, teachers and their helpers who participated in this project from 1.00p.m. - 3.00p.m and tidied around the school, church, village and community centre. Appreciation also to the adults and teenagers who participated in the evening session from 7.00p.m. - 9.00p.m and cleaned up approach roads from Mullinroe to Kilmore and finished at the football grounds. A great crowd took part and hopefully for the next time, we will even have more volunteers. We appeal to everyone to be vigilant and try to keep our area free from litter, silage wrap, plastic bags etc.
Congratulations to Lauren Brady and Ellie Fitzsimons who recently received Holy Communion for the first time. Pupils of St. Columba’s National School, we compliment their teacher and parents for having the girls so well prepared for their big day.
