St. Patrick’s Day Parade: There was a huge turnout for Ballymahon’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Sunday when thankfully, the rain stayed away for the evening. There was a great variety of Bands, colourful Floats, School children dressed appropriately for the event, all sized Tractors, Trailers, Motor Bikes and lots more to keep the crowd thoroughly entertained. Congratulations to the many business people who had their shop windows so beautifully decorated for the occasion and well done indeed to the Organising Committee, their hard workers and everyone involved who, over the last few months, worked tirelessly to make the day such a huge success, bringing a large crowd into the town for the day. Well done everyone
Ballymahon Fianna Fail A.G.M.: The A.G.M. of Ballymahon Cumann took place in the Convent Day Care Centre on Tuesday night 12th March. The meeting was chaired by Cllr. Michael Cahill. The following officers were elected for the forthcoming year: President- Pat Lloyd. Chairperson – John Browne. Vice-Chairperson – Rita Steele. Secretary – John McGee. Treasurers – Dermot Sheehy, Willie Dowler. P.R.O. – Pat Rock. Delegates to the Comhairle Ceantair – Rita Steele, Arthur Conlon, Willie Dowler. Cindy Mannion, Attracta Sheehan. Delegates to Convention- John McGee, Dermot Sheehy, John Browne. Ogra Delegate- William Dowler and Derek Kelly. Youth Officers - Brendan Fox, Peter Cox, Tony Tiernan, Mary Steele, Deirdre Steele. Cllr. Barney Steele addressed the meeting and spoke of some local issues. The Cumman expressed their sympathy with the families in the area of those who were bereaved during the year and especially to Pat and Ann Redahan, Corglass, Moyne on the sad death of their daughter Debbie which occurred last week and to all her family. Mary Lillis, National Executive was also in attendance at the meeting.

Welcome Home: to Kate Connolly, Rathmore who has returned from her six-week holiday in Australia. We hope Kate and her friend enjoyed a trip of a lifetime during which they did lots of travelling around taking in Thailand and many other places on their journey .

Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage: The Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes takes place this year from 27th May to 1st June. The fully-inclusive price is €699.00. Minor football club: Ballymahon/Forgney Minor football club are running a Sweep Draw on the Aintree Grand National on Saturday April 5th. Tickets are now available at €2 each or a book of 3 for €5.

History Lecture: “How the land was used after the boundaries were drawn up” this Talk is to be given by well-known local historian Paddy Egan on Thursday, 21st March in Cooney’s Hotel, Ballymahon at 8.00p.m. in Flanagan Suite. Paddy will talk about early uses of the land, ringforts, quern stones and early farming methods. He is also a graduate of Local History from the University of Maynooth. His thesis was the History of Flax and Linen about which he has written a book. Paddy has in fact written some 15 books on local history and made dvds on the History of the Royal Canal and the art of butter-making. A charge of €5 at the door will be made on the 21st to defray expenses. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided on the night, an opportunity to mix and chat afterwards .
Titanic Exhibitiion: The Carrickedmond branch of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association is considering the possibility of organising a tour on some Sunday in July to visit the Titanic Exhibition in Belfast. New Shop: A New and Second-hand Shop opened beside Hanleys Newsagents last week. Donations would be appreciated, looking for ladies, gents and children clothing, household textiles, bric-a-brac, toys, hand-bags, jewellery, school uniforms, nursery items, unwanted gifts, furniture. Pauric Connolly Cars: The best of luck to Pauric Connolly who has moved from his Car Sales premises on the Athlone road to Mostrim road, Ballymahon. PCC is now situated right beside the Fire Brigade Station at Parkside where Pauric sells new and used cars and has been in the business for a number of years now. We wish him continued success in his thriving business.
Football Club Championship: Congratulations to St. Bridget’s football team, Co Roscommon on winning the All-Ireland Club Championship Final in Croke Park on St. Patrick’s Day when they beat Ballymun Kickhams by the narrowest of margins and to Frankie Dolan, a former player with Ballymahon who scored the winning point in the last few seconds of the game. Well done to you all.

Death of Anna McCormack: It was with deep regret that we learnt of the death of Mrs Anna McCormack (Nee Fox), Toome, Ballymahon and late of Ballinalee at Bushy Park Nursing Home in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary. A genuine lady with a heart of gold, Anna was pre-deceased by her husband Tom many years ago, both of them retired to Ballymahon having spent a long number of years working in England. She was a very religious lady and a most obliging neighbour. Her remains were laid to rest in St. Emer’s Cemetery, Ballinalee, back in her homeland. Anna is survived by her brothers Tom, Paddy and Gerry, sister Peggy, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, many friends, and her neighbours who looked after her so well, we extend our sincere sympathy to you all. May God grant rest to her dear Soul.
G.A.A.: Well done to Ballymahon Division 2 Reserve League team who had a good win against Carrickedmond in Leo Casey Park on Saturday evening last. Also well done to the Division 3 Reserve League team who beat Newtowncashel on Friday night last under lights. Hard luck to Ballymahon/Forgney Minor team who got pipped in the final minute to lose to Newtowncashel by the narrowest of margins in the Minor League , their game was played in Leo Casey Park on Sunday morning.
Innyside Singers: A reminder to all Innyside Singers members... there will be a Rehearsal on this Thursday night, March 21st at the Bog Lane Theatre at the usual time of 8.00p.m. There will then be a break for the Easter and rehearsals will resume on April 11th. It is important that as many as possible members attend for some forthcoming events, these dates to be announced later.
