RAMBLERS: Thanks to Philip Epps P.R.O. Boherquill Ramblers for the following report on last Sundays walk “Summer arrived last Sunday, June 26th, when the Ramblers visited Portlick for their afternoon walk. The hot sun was tempered by a breeze that was just slightly cooler and the group were glad of the shade as they followed the winding trail through the forest beside Lough Ree. The shade was much deeper than on the Ramblers last visit, with the trees now in full leaf and the ferns and mosses taking over from the bluebells which had preferred the brighter spring light. Short diversions from the track led to the shore where the full heat of the sun could be felt as the view over the water to the far side of the Lough could be enjoyed to the accompanying murmur of water gently lapping on the stones at the water’s edge. The sound of birdsong in the forest and grasshoppers in the meadows together with the profusion of wild flowers all around added to the summery atmosphere as the Ramblers followed the loop walk past Portlick Castle and the nearby large scouting centre, back to their starting point at the Portlick car park. The customary post-walk cup of tea was especially welcome on such a warm day.The Ramblers next walk will be beside the River Inny on next Sunday, July 3rd. cars will leave Boherquill at 2pm and meet at the Float Bridge near Coole at 2.10pm. A possible weekend away on Clare Island, Co Mayo is being considered for the weekend of Friday 2nd to Sunday the 4th of September.
