Arva have to wait for another week to find out when their next game in the Hotel Kilmore Junior Football Championship will be played. It all depends on the result of the game between Munterconnacht and Ballymachugh which takes place this Sunday evening in Kingspan Breffni Park at 6 o’clock.
On Saturday afternoon last, Cavan made the trip to Portlaoise to play Kerry in the All Ireland Junior Championship Final and after a good hours football Cavan emerged victorious with 2 goals to spare – 2-14 to 0-14. It was a great day for Arva who had James Morris at full back, Ciaran Brady at half back and Peter Morris among the substitutes. Both James and Ciaran gave outstanding displays during the game and the fact that they defeated Kerry added to the success. We congratulate our 3 Arva players and the entire panel and management for their efforts for Cavan football. This panel of players have been great ambassadors for the county, their clubs and their families and hopefully, we will see more of them in the future. As a county, this is the first All Ireland title since 1952 and in goals on that team was Seamus Morris, Main Street, Arva who is still in good form and living in Mullingar. Seamus was delighted to hear the news after the game on Saturday. When St Patrick’s College won their only Hogan Cup in 1972, Michael English, Farrangarve lined out for the college while in the mid 1990’s Ballyhaise won the Agricultural Colleges All Ireland with Dessie Dobson, Forthill a prominent member.

It was with much regret that we heard of the death of Mr Jack Sheridan, Brankhill, Arva which occurred suddenly at his residence on Saturday, 9th August. Born and reared at Chapel Road, Arva, Jack worked hard all his life. In the 1950s he worked on the railways around Tullow, Carlow and it was there in 1959 he met and on 10th August 1960 married Margaret McIntyre. They moved to Longford Street, Arva and in 1977 they moved into their new home in Brankhill. Jack worked many years in McCormack Products, Killeshandra, as a part time Postman and as a lorry driver with Gerry Ellis and Sons. Jack had a lifelong interest in football and was involved in reforming the Arva club in 1962 and the subsequent merger with Cormore in 1964 to form St Patrick’s, Arva. He was always proud of the fact that his uncle Jim Smith was part of the Arva team that won the Junior Championship in 1933 – Arva’s first. He also boasted that when Cavan won the Minor All Ireland in 1937, four of his neighbours played on the team. He was a keen Huntsman and kept Beagles often winning in local competitions. Jack was also a keen fisherman and loved the peace and tranquillity of the lakes. He had a lifelong love of farming and always kept quality animals. Jack always supported the Breffni 20K Challenge and when he himself was a patient in St Luke’s he took great pride in pointing out the Breffni Wing and the Arva room to other patients. In that year he cut the tape to start the 20K in Cavan. His remains reposed at his residence until removal on Monday morning for Requiem Mass in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva with Burial afterwards in Coronea Cemetery. Rev Donald Hannon C.C. Arva was the main celebrant at the Mass assisted by Rev John Daly, Rev Kevin Fay, Rev Gerard Cassidy. Members of the St Patrick’s Arva G.F.C. and the Cormore Hunt Club formed a Guard of Honour accompanied the hearse on the last part of the journey to the Church. Jack is survived by his wife Margaret, sons John, Denis, Ciaran, Enda, daughter Mrs Yvonne Mullally, brothers Joe and Patrick, sister Mrs Nuala Morrow, grandchildren, nephews nieces relatives and friends to all of whom we extend sincere sympathy.
Sympathy is extended to Mrs Bridie Dobson, Forthill, Arva on the death of her sister, Sr Margaret Galligan, late of Glascarrick, Loughduff who passed away at the Sisters of Mercy Nursing Home, Colwyn Bay, North Wales on 6th August. Burial took place in Wales.
Belated congratulations are extended to Mr Gavin Doyle, Farrangarve, Arva and Ms Mairead Burke, Straide, Co Mayo who were married in St Peter and Paul’s Church, Straide on 21st June with a reception afterwards in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh, Co Mayo. Congratulations also to Mr Sean McManus, Drumcrow South, Derylane and Ms Linda Heaslip, Knockahista, Cavan who were married in St Fethlimidh’s Cathedral, Kilmore, Cavan on 18th July with a reception afterwards in the Landmark, Hotel, Carrick on Shannon. Both Gavin and Sean are prominent members of the Arva team and have given many years service to the club. On behalf of all their friends we wish both couples many years of health and happiness in the future.
