Congratulations to Nicole Rowley, daughter of Declan and Rosemarie, Esker Killoe who was awarded student of the year in Scoil Mhuire, Longford and presented with the beautiful Bank of Ireland trophy. Well Nicole, this trophy could not have been awarded to a more pleasant charming wee lass. Well justified. Also a well warranted congratulations to Larry Moran, son of Sean and Rita, Clontumpher, Killoe, who was presented with the prestigious Mel Murtagh trophy as student of the year in St Mel’s College, Longford. Also Caolan McManus, Corneddan, Killoe who was honoured with student of the year from Moyne secondary school. All above students are past pupils of St Theresa’s NS, Clontumpher, Killoe and we give a big buille bus to their former principal, Master Harte and his teaching and staff colleagues. The parish extend a well done to all you youth and wish you great health and happiness in your future path through life.

In appreciation

Aisling and Emily Hughes recently returned from a volunteering trip to Vesnova Children’s Mental Asylum in Belarus with Adi Roche’s Chernobyl Children International (CCI). The institution is home to over 170 children between 4 and 18 years of age who are orphans of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The children have a range of physical and mental disabilities. Our time was spent helping to feed the children, doing physical and occupational therapy, entertaining them and taking them out for walks. The weather was starting to improve, so it was great to take them out of bed and bring them out for some fresh air. It is a seldom occurrence, as the staff are stretched to their limit and rarely have an opportunity to take them outdoors. The state staff provide only the most basic of care. It was lovely to see the children one year older from last year’s trip, their smiling faces would warm anyone’s heart. With the help of our family, friends, neighbours and local community, we have raised over 5,500 euro and the total continues to rise. In addition to this, we brought out medicines and dressings, nappies and creams. We are very grateful to everyone who helped to make this a very worthwhile and memorable trip. We have to give a special mention to our local parish – Killoe , St Theresa’s national school who donated some of the proceeds from their Bring and Buy Sale, Ennybegs and Cullyfad Community Centres, as well as a very generous anonymous donation left in Ann Hughes shop. We would like to thank the many many people who gave us toys, hats, gloves and clothes to bring to Vesnova and our 3 local shops for assisting us with collecting these. We paid for our own travel and we also completed the Flora Ladies Mini Marathon for CCI and are very grateful to everyone who sponsored us. All the funds raised are used towards the medical care of the children in Vesnova and the benefit of Adi Roche’s work is clear in the orphanage - conditions are improving year to year with CCI’s intervention. Without the continued work of CCI, I dread to think what little care the children would have.
