Leader Cup

Leader Cup

On Sunday last many supporters of the Maroon and White travelled to Pearse Park to witness a famous victory for the half parish. With county champions Longford Slashers as the opposition we all knew a 100% performance from every member of the panel was essential. With the sides all square at six each at the interval an entertaining and close encounter was expected in the second half. However on the resumption Slashers forged ahead scoring three points. Like many other occasions when in a similar situation the lads did not panic. With David McGivney firing over some excellent points Mullinalaghta were always in contention. Following a good passing movement James McGivney levelled proceedings when he rattled the back of the Slashers net. With the minutes ticking away the tension was unbearable. When David McGivney scored his sixth point in the dying seconds the scene was set for the Leader Cup to return to Mullinalaghta for the first time since 1951. Gary Rogers and Rian Brady also got their names on the scoresheet. There were great celebrations when Sheila Reilly, Editor of the Longford Leader presented the cup to captain Shane Mulligan. A nice gesture from Shane was requesting Ruairi McElligott help him lift the cup. Ruairi was unable to play due to injury. We congratulate all concerned with bringing the trophy to the parish. Best wishes to our minors who face Clonguish in Under 21 B Championship final at Emmet Park on this Saturday 7th with a 7.30 pm throw in. Please check fixtures for confirmation.

On this Sunday 8th December at St. Bernard’s N.S. Abbeylara presentation of medals to Northern Gaels Minor League and Championship winning teams and U16 League and U 14 Shield teams will take place. All are welcome to attend. Proceedings will get underway at 7p.m.
