Mercy Secondary School, Ballymahon notes

Third years

Third years

On Wednesday, September 11, Ms O Neill gave all third year students detailed, valuable information on how to effectively manage their homework and organise their studying. We hope this information will be put to good use by all third year students.

Junior results

Well done to all TY and fifth year students who received their Junior Certificate results last Wednesday. The school community are proud of your brilliant achievements and a huge thanks to all the teachers and parents who helped you on your way. We would especially like to congratulate Ciaran O’Hanlon who received 12 As and also congratulations to Oisin Bennett who received 11 As. Ciaran is one of only thirteen students who achieved 12 As in the country. Well done to all and we hope you all had a great day.

Sixth years

On Thursday, September 12, the sixth year students were given a very informative presentation on preparing for the Leaving Certificate and study skills by Michael Bond. We hope the sixth years have benefited immensely from this presentation. All sixth years will also be attending The Higher Options in Dublin with their Guidance Counsellor on Thursday, September 19. It promises to be a very informative day as well for all our Leaving Cert students as they prepare to focus on their CAO application forms.

Lunchtime debating

Mr O’Gara and Ms Egan will be running a lunchtime debating league for all years on Wednesdays and Fridays. There are six teams who will be battling each other for the coveted spot at the top of the league.

On Wednesday, September 11, soccer trials took place for minor, junior and senior players for the up and coming season. These trials involved new and returning players. We congratulate all who earned a place on this year’s team and look forward to see you play for the school. Thanks to their coaches Reina Flower and Kevin Stansbury.

U14 Football

Mr Walsh and Paddy O Connor of Longford Coaching and Development are running a lunchtime football league for first year students which is on every day at 1:20pm. Four teams compete against each other to win and be crowned league champions. This lunchtime league is also training for the blitzes and leagues for the year.

Training has begun for the girls U16 and U19 basketball who are being trained by Mr Dempsey. We hope we have the same success from the team as we had last year. Boys U16 and U19 basketball training will commence in the next week or so. The boys will be trained by Miss Carr for the year.

The Open equestrian team of Megan Connell, Christopher Connell, Christopher Whyte, Áine McLoughlin and Derek Shaw are preparing for hopefully another successful year in the field of show jumping.

We wish all our teams the best of luck in all events for the up and coming year.
