On this Friday night 27 September in the Boomerang Bar, Granard, the club will launch their 125th Anniversary Celebrations. We have a host of activities planned which will be outlined on the night. Entertainment will be kindly provided by Chuck and June. Refreshments will be served. Monies raised on the night will go to Longford Hospice. Looking forward to a great night.
Granard Country Markets continue in the Community Centre Granard every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11.00am. As Winter approaches the fire wood is back in stock along with the usual supply of Breads, Cakes Jams, Eggs and crafts.
An information officer from Co. Longford Citizen’s Information Service will be in attendance at Granard Area Action Information Office Main Street every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.
The Library due to refurbishment of the building has relocated to Rath Mhuire Resource Centre at the Community Centre Barrack Street Granard and is open every Friday.
The Annual General Meeting of Granard Community Games will be held on this Thursday evening 26 September at 8 pm in Sacred Heart N.S. We sincerely thank Tommy McNally for his contribution to Community Games. Tommy intends to step down as Chairman at the AGM but we hope he will continue to be part of the games. We urgently need parents to put themselves forward to help with the organization of the games. There is so much scope within this organization for children to get involved. But unless we have parents willing to help we cannot get involved.
A table quiz will take place in Keogh’s Bar, Mullinalaghta on this Friday night 27 September at 9pm. Proceeds to Northern Gaels club the young footballers of Abbeylara and Mullinalaghta.
The Restoration of St. Mel’s Cathedral Longford is progressing very well. An Open Day will be held on Sunday 29 September when everyone is welcome to come along and view the progress. The Cathedral will open from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. and this event is free of charge.
St. Vincent de Paul Shop
“New 2U” shop at Market Street Granard is open every Friday and Saturday 10.00am to 6.00pm and the first Tuesday of every month from 10 to 6pm.
St. Mary’s Glotto

The Longford Branch of the Alzheimer Society of Ireland would like to announce that our Church Gate Collection will be held on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 September throughout the county. The money raised will greatly contribute to our continued services in the area.
A fundraising night will take place in the Boomerang Bar, Granard on Saturday 28 September in association with Breffni Challenge to raise much needed funds for St. Luke’s Hospital; Cavan Oncology Unit and Breast Cancer Research.
Moatsiders Active Age
Our first meeting of the Autumn season took place last Thursday and we had a very busy session planning for the coming months. First on the agenda is our outing to Ennis, Co. Clare, for a 3 night stay – Tuesday 1 October – Thursday 3 October.
Men’s Social Club:
Our first date for September coincides with the Garda Band performance so we look forward to seeing everybody there, for transport arrangements contact Lucy/Jackie at 043-6686309.
The Library is based at our Centre during the refurbishment period, opening time is every Friday 10pm – 5pm in the O’Carolan Room.
The Volunteer Centre in Longford will be holding a Volunteer Information Outreach Service in Rath Mhuire Centre over the next couple of weeks, commencing on Monday 7 October at 11am.
A Fundraising night and draw in aid of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital will take place on 28 September in Crawford Lounge Abbeylara. Entertainment on the night with Mary O’Connor. Lines for the draw are available locally at €3 each of 2 for €5 for many valuable and unique prizes. Your support for this very worthy cause will be greatly appreciated.
The monthly meeting of Granard I.C.A. will take place on Thursday next 3 October 2013 at 8.00pm in the Credit Union meeting room. A “Bring and Buy” will be held on the night so don’t forget to bring the goods. New members always very welcome.
Longford Co. Childcare Committee Tus Nua project are holding a FREE Play Day for families with young children in the Granard Area on Thursday 3 October 2013 in Lus na Greine Family Resource Centre Main Street Granard.
Bingo continues each Wednesday night in the Community Centre Granard at 8.45pm. This week’s Jackpot is €12,300. Sincere thanks to everyone who supports this fundraising activity. Proceeds go to Abbeylara and St. Mary’s G.F.C.
The Healthy Hearts walking club in Granard had a good turn out last Thursday evening for a most enjoyable walk. As the evenings are getting dark we have now changed out day and time for walks. We will meet at Higginstown on Saturday mornings at 9.00am. Walks usually last 1 hour to 1.5 hours. New members always welcome – just come along and join in the fun.
Sympathy is extended to the family of the late John (Sean) McKeown Augnagarron Granard and late of Glasgow who died on 13 September. May he rest in peace. The death of Joseph Gregory New York and late of Springtown Granard occurred in New York on Friday 20 September. Sympathy is extended to his daughter Yvonne Gregory Creevy Granard and his grandson Ross. His sons Paul and Joseph and their families in New York. Funeral to take place in Abbeylara later this week. May he rest in peace.
