Tidy Towns AGM

Our AGM will take place tomorrow night, Thursday 30 in the Handball Sports Complex, Abbeylara at 8.30pm.  We are looking forward to meeting new members who are prepared to come on board and help out with the running of the tidy towns.  We need people to form a Committee and set up a new agenda for the coming year.  There are lots of plans for this year and these cannot be put into practice without members.  We welcome both Fas and Tus members to this meeting also, hoping to see you all on the night.

Country Markets

Granard country markets held their Annual General Meeting following the market on Friday last January 24 and the following officers were elected for the coming year; Chairperson Ann O Hara, Secretary Angela Durkin, Treasurer Alan Harrison, Assistant Treasurer Margaret Duggan, PRO Eileen Kilbride, Controller Breege Mulfaul. Sincere good wishes to Evelyn Stafford and Pat Wilson for good health and happiness in their retirement and thanks for their very loyal service to the markets over the years. The new committee remind all their patrons that the market is open every Friday morning from 8.30am to 11.00 am in their new premises on upper main street.

An information officer from Co. Longford Citizens Information Service is available at Granard Area Action Group Office Main Street Granard each Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12.30pm.


Enrolment in Sacred Heart National School, Granard for September 2014 for Junior Infants will take place on Friday 31 January at 2.00pm. Parents are welcome to bring their children to the school where they will be introduced to their teacher, and will have an opportunity to view their classroom and the school. Dog Owners

Dog Owners please be aware, when walking your dog, it is your responsibility to clean up after your dog has done his business. The village footpaths and parks are a disgrace. Longford Co. Council is putting up notices re same and offenders will be fined 150 euro.

Clonfin Commemoration

The annual Clonfin Commemoration ceremony will be held on Sunday February 2 next. The Commemoration will take place starting with mass for all deceased members at 11.30am in St Mary’s church in Granard. At 3.00pm the ceremony will take place at the site in Clonfin where Bishop Colm O Reilly will be this year’s guest speaker and following this there will refreshments in McElvaney’s of Coolarty. As this years ceremony takes place on the exact date that the famous battle took place (February 2nd) the committee are looking forward to a large crowd attending.

Adult Badminton
